View Full Version : the word ' suck's '

wonder is anyone else not mad about the word 'suck's' being used casually in situations where someone or something is disliked
when sucks is said about something it can sound 'odd' if someone is not familiar with the expression
(but getting there )http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
meaning, in a situation which does not relate to 'sucking'
as most know it, like in in a baby sucking a breast/bottle/ or sucking a lollipop...
wonder how did the word become used as a substitute for 'I hate that'
or 'I don't like that' or 'it's just horrible' or 'it's grotesque'
or plain old 'not nice'
when we say someone 'sucks up' to someone it's slightly different ?
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_wink.gif
just wondering

It could have go started like this: A South Dakota farmer was talking to a Nebraska farmer and the Nebraska farmer says to the South Dakota farmer, "Man the wind sure does blow a lot up there" and the slightly annoyed South Dakota farmers says, "It's not that the wind blow up here, it's just that Nebraska sucks.

thanks all
I guess I just don't like the word
and it shows so much in places where it means nothing
it's just as easy to use the correct words ?
it's especially harsh (on the senses, depending on our senses I suppose)
when someone says 'IT SUCKS ' in massive letters
I'm not referring to slang words or words used to emphasize something in a sentence like ' it's bloody awful' (bloody is an adjective here)
we don't say 'it bloodys' when something is horrible
we use the words differently
the word sucks seems to be used a lot when something is not so good or nice.
and I just wondered how it came about.
nothing wrong in that ? wondering I mean
if so, it sucks:lol:
it can go (the expression) just the same way as it came
if we all just have a few (deeper) thoughts on the word ...
sucks
does it mean anything when said about something?
it just seems to hit the senses. that's all
nothing else
the word suck is ' to draw liquid into the mouth by using the lip muscles
to draw liquid from a thing
to squeeze using the tongue
to use a sucking action or make a sucking sound
to draw in . to obtain
suck in or up .... to absorb
suck dry ...to exhaust the contents of by sucking
the sponge sucked up water'
I think I just found a clue to the answer
'to draw in air instead of water as a defective pump does'
perhaps it came from what happens when we see something we don't particulary like
the sucking of air
we could say (about something we are not mad about)
it's ugly
it's not nice
it's grotesque .
don't like it
hate it
whatever
sucks really sucks used in certain ways
just a short cut word which means nothing
depending on what we are using it for
and can sound ugly as an expression
no one should take what I am saying as a personal insult
(for any reason:confused: )
maybe it's the way it's said
but as I never heard it said
only saw it written here
it hits a cord every time
not a nerve
just a chord
and I lose track of what it was used for
just that the word sticks somewhere in my throat
when it is said in relation to some things
thinking not as a purist
just see no reason why 'IT SUCKS' is said , instead of 'Gosh, I hate that'
whatever

Marie, Marie, you have far too much time on your hands! :D:D
During an election year, Ross Perot said, more or less that, "That giant sucking sound you hear is your jobs going below the border". "Gosh, I hate that" just wouldn't have had the same impact, would it? ;) (Gore might have said that, & look where he is. Not that Perot did any better, but at least he put on a good show. (Now it seems that I have far too much time on my hands!):o

It all has to do with economy of language.
In the time you can say, "Gosh, I really hate that," I can say, "That sucks," two and a half times.
It's not my favorite term either, but when in Rome.......

to suck
O.E. sucan, from PIE root *sug-/*suk- of imitative origin (cf. O.S., O.H.G. sugan, O.N. suga, M.Du. sughen, Du. zuigen, Ger. saugen "to suck;" L. sugere "to suck," succus "juice, sap;" O.Ir. sugim, Welsh sugno "to suck"). Meaning "do fellatio" is first recorded 1928. Slang sense of "be contemptible" first attested 1971 (the underlying notion is of fellatio). Suck eggs is from 1906. Suck hind tit "be inferior" is Amer.Eng. slang first recorded 1940.
v. intr.
Vulgar Slang. To be disgustingly disagreeable or offensive.
Now this doesn't tell us in which context it was first used (in the meaning we use here) as american slang in 1940.

I meant all over not just you Frank
(about the word anyway):)
didn't mean anyone to feel it was attacking their way of life personally
we have things over here (more so) which we say and do
they would not be usual
(the norm. seen by someone from another country)
to say the leasthttp://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_lol.gif
about the programme you mention
we used to have '60 minutes' on our tv station (from the U.S) until a few years ago
I loved it
if it is the same one we are talking about
http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_confused.gif but I don't think so
this was a news programme
for some reason it has not been on for years.
after the news (CBS) late at night the announcer says something about the '60 minutes' programme coming up next
but it is not shown on our station anymore
I always found it so interesting
and I was sad to see Dan Rather (? not sure of the spelling) retire.
loved his voice
he will be missed.
don't think I know the programme you are talking about
thanks Frank

perhaps the slang (' it sucks' ) started in 1940 because of something to do with the war
a lot of things changed then

Yeah.......this is definitely teenage talk...........I use it a lot when I don't like something. I guess in America, saying that something "sucks" is about as normal as saying that something is "not good". It just emphasizes the fact that its SOOO bad, it'll suck the life out of you when you use it!!!

The "1940's" explanation struck a cord in my memory.
It seemed odd to me when my grandfather would describe something in a negative way by saying "sucks hind tit". I asked him about that saying one day and he said "Jeffrey, you remember that runt [pup] that you took home and bottle fed because he was getting the last tit if he got anything at all? Well, that runt was getting the short end of the stick, left out in the cold, a raw deal in life because the hind tits on a nursing animal produce the least amount of milk. If you're left with the "hind tit" in life, your outlook ain't too good.
Now, at dinner that night my Grandpa was late to the table and most of the food had already been dished (he was pretty late). I thought I'd try out my newfound vocabulary. "Grandpa, looks like you're suckin' hind tit there". Thankfully, my family is good natured folk. Laughter was shared around the table but I am certain that my Mom was mortified.

Kobayashi Maru
An example of solving a problem by changing the conditions surrounding the problem:
One of the StarTrek movies mentions the KobayashiMaru, a training scenario for hopeful captains. There's no way to succeed; no matter what you do, you're destined to lose. Starfleet used it as a test of character, to see how people handle no-win situations. Cadet James T. Kirk (later known as CaptainHornDog) created a successful solution by modifying the simulation.
"You cheated!"
"I changed the conditions of the test. Got a commendation for original thinking."
So; as it applies to The dedication page of Peter Davld's "New Generation - Stone & Anvil" book is,
"To the brave crew & passengers of the Kobayashi Maru... sucks to be you."
then the crew of that are in a no-win situation, and the author doesn't envy their position.
Maybe?

thanks a lot Julie
I guessed that
but it's not really relevant to what the question is about, that sucks is a not proper word to use in certain situations.
it's not a no win situation
I don't think so
it's a case of taking what we want from the word
and just having to accept that , unless everyone stops using it
but they have to want to
and if they don't
thats ok . it's the language...or the lingo as we say
no harm done asking the question
(just some thoughts)
