Shot at 400mm, ISO 400, 1/ 1250 and f8. The board is in focus, but the rider aint.
Any suggestions please?

Tough to judge for me, but I think the board and the rider would be in the same focal range at f8. It looks like either the spray from the foreground wave is in focus (The sharp white dots of water), or that the image is heavily cropped, losing detail overall. Or, maybe your focal point was not exactly on the boarder? Anyway, I don't see the board being anymore sharp than the rider.

Thanks...
My thoughts exactly, and also, if the focus picked up on the board, there would be more depth of field behind than in front.
My 40D 100-400 focussing is very fast, and it might just be that the spray was in focus.
Water sports like this are difficult, especailly the exposure getting confused with the white water.
Anyone else have a view?

I like the shot. The rider is just a whisker oof but it does not hurt it. If you'd asked what's you don't like about the rider in this shot, I'd have guessed you wanted more of his face for expression. Either way it's still a keeper.
BTW I am always wondering whether you're on a boat, Sea-Doo, shore ? You have the best angle in these posts ! Cheers.

Thanks, and I just might try f9.5 next time for greater DOF...
I take all my photos from the shore, but getting close enough can be difficult. Therefore, I often have to crop and then re-size in PS using the 10% method.
Cheers!
