Search for examples online .. don't say "alrighty then" like a kid who doesn't get his way when some one doesn't answer your question right away .You asked a day after Christmas, relax a bit.

How much do you want to spend, what size photos do you want to use? How many photos do you want to display? I'm a big fan of being creative with your work. Being a photographer requires some creativity and if your going to show your work off in a plan black portfolio and call it day then great. I'm sure your work will stand out amongst the other 100 students who have the same thing. Be creative, knock around a few days and post them here. See if some can play off those ideas. Search google and see what some other people have done, I'm sure it'll help spark some ideas. Good luck!

How much do you want to spend, what size photos do you want to use? How many photos do you want to display? And, just what is the portfolio going to be used for?

Because you have a descriptive title, you can look at the "Similar Threads" links at the bottom-left of this page!
Each link you visit should provide more links at the bottom.

school purposes. showing professors and things like that For what reason? What do you expect from them? 300-400? That's a lot of money for something you aren't sure what it's purpose will be, no? Give us something to focus on.

what size is your portfolio prints (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=410715)

reason jus to show professors. see the thing is that 3 of my professors in school recomend i do it to show to other professors in hopes of maybe scoring some jobs and maybe landing something with one of the departments in the school. its a suggestion that was given to me a few times so i figured id give it a try but since i have no specific purpose i dunno where to begin

How many images do you plan to keep on it? What sizes will they be? Could a free site such as flickr work for you?

how many images? hmmm no idea and as far as sizes im not sure either. i mainly shoot landscapes so whatever size would work properly for that. theres some chick at my job that does modeling and she showed me her portfolio but the thing is huge. and its one giant photo per page. i dont really think id need anything so large. im really sorry but im so new to this and have no idea about any of this. as far as flicker i have one n its great but there are those times when i cant access the net. kind of why id like to have the physical portfolio to maybe keep in the car

personally the first thing i would start to do is photograph people. landscapes are all good, but generally at some point a general photog job is going to require to shoot people, headshots, events, and classrooms. so in my opinion you should atleast have some in there. I put my portfolio online it was the most practical way for me to do it. I can send someone the link and they can look at it when ever they have time. I dont think I would just put mine on flicker I wanted something a bit more pro looking so i went with this http://www.izattphotography.com/p961907175
along with having it online I can now sell my photos as well. My portfolio is more based towards photojournalism so I have some of everything sports, events, headshots, landscapes, and racing.

something is better than nothing, but i wouldn't spend 200 on mine just my 2 cents.

If you're looking for something to physically put your prints in the Itoya portfolios are nice and come in many different sizes depending on what size you want your prints to be. I use the 11 x 14 portrait style because it fits several 4 x6's and then anything up to 11 x 14.
If you're looking for software, Jalbum has some nice free software for setting up albums that you could use as a portfolio.
