Very very new to photography. I just got my XS/1000d for Christmas and I've taken hundreds of pictures already. I love B&W photos. Here are some I took of my niece, all comments, criticisms and suggestions welcome.

Really cute kid. I think my only complaint would be that the black and white conversions are a little dull. Number 2 is great though.

Thank you! It was quite easy as she loves the camera!

Thanks! Number 2 seems to be a favorite among everybody! What do you mean by conversion? I took these pictures with the B&W settings on the camera and they are untouched.

Thanks! I'm loving it so far, just barely scratching the surface of it's potential. Love it so much I've already purchased a macro lens to have some more to play with! How do you like it?

That would pretty much be why. The in camera b&w is pretty much give you the dullest possible conversion of anything. If you don't mind doing post processing, just shoot in color and convert in a photo editing program. You have a LOT more control over exactly what kind of black and white it comes out as.

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to give that a try in the future!

Something else that made me think of this thread after I took my portrait grip off; when you're shooting portraits, shoot in portrait orientation. A vertical shot just makes so much more sense when you're shooting a face.
