View Full Version : Teleconverter for blurry background

I had posted a similar question but didn't really get a precise answer. I have a canon A95 and I want to know if a teleconverter would make it possible to blur the background behind my subject. Remember, my goal isn't really to have a very powerful zoom, but just to be able to get a nice blurry background behind my subjects, which is almost impossible with the native lens of those compact cameras, even at full zoom and with the proper settings!!

And if so, what's the best teleconverter : canon, tiffen, or any other than I don't know about ???

On the lensmate website, the sample images of the A85 with a teleconverter are quite convincing (can't see much degradation in term of image quality there), but that doesn't tell me if those teleconverter will work for my blurry background effect...

Thanks guys!!!!

Well to get a shallow DOF (blury background) you need to a large apature, long focal length, and be close tot he subject.
Useing a teleconverter will give you that, if it still alows you to use F2.8 with out any vigenetting (cutting off the corners) and it increases the focal length enough.

Getting a shallow DOF is a real problem with a compact, if this does work I would also be very interested.

The best way to get blurring is to use software after the face. Cut out the subject, blurr the image then paste the subject back over the blurred image.

Monarque,. essentially the answer is "no" to your question. A t-con won't really help.

You don't say what your subject matter is,. but one of the only ways to get a shallow DOF with a compact digital is to use some extreme macro echniques,. like the one in Megawebs Sticky thread using a reversed lens.
