Can you guys give me some of your experiences with the Canon A1000 VS the Canon A590?

Are these relatively light, and will they easily fit into pockets?

We need to replace an older P&S, which is used for family and vacation snap shots.

+/- comments appreciated.

Thank you,.......marc

I own an A590. In my opinion it is not worth it. The pics come out grainy and with noise. If you want quality pics and not quantity in mega pixles the A530 takes excellent pics. I had one and would still have it today if it did not just quick working all of a sudden. And it is pocket sized. The prints also come out very clear up to 8x10 with the A530.

Don't know what an A1000 is but, I do own a 590. I am in no way any kind of photographer, but it does all I want it to. If a picture comes out poorly, it is because of me. The camera will do way more than I can make it do. For about $120 bucks, it has created some great memories for us.

Like Michael, I too have a A590. and have no trouble getting good pictures with it. As with all conpacts in this class, keep it out of auto mode, and the ISO low. Sorry, can't speak for the A1000.

I agree. I have a 590 and it is poor on quality. I had a Nikon that had less of everything and took much better pictures so I don't think it's me.....lol

I just got an A590 and I disagree. All the shots I took outdoors were fine. As with ANY compact, shooting in low light or high ISO will yield more noise.
The A590IS actually has some of the best IQ of the smaller Canon Compacts out there.

The flash pictures from the A590 are not worth printing. I've tried everything and they just aren't as good as my old Nikon P& S camera. I thought I was upgrading but I was wrong.

I think lots of folks get a camera like the 590, put it in auto mode, and then are disapointed when the camera chooses a high ISO, which doesn't work well with a compact camera. I really don't know why Canon (and others) bothered to put the higher ISOs on these camera, but they did. So it's important to keep the camera out of the auto mode, so it doesn't up and choose an 800 ISO, creating tons of noise!;)

Anyone have any updates? My moms birthday is coming up and I'm trying to decide which one to get. I have the A590 and am happy with it, Its seems to be a little harder to get now, and the A1000 seems readily available do to being a newer model. She just needs it for simple point-&-shoot

Well, plenty of people have posted about their pleasure at the A590's performance, and included photos. But if your mother doesn't want aperture or shutter priority capability or full manual exposure, it probably won't matter to her either way.

Thanks for the input. I'm thinking, I'll get her the A1000.

I love my 30D and 5D, but I was getting a little fed up carrying either on long holidays.
I decided that as most of my holiday pics are just snaps anyway, I wanted to get a small compact.

Perhaps I should add here that I use my slr's for my main interest - studio images.

I chose the A1000 (is), its not the best compact in the world, but for size, price and image quality, it suited my needs perfectly. I would have preferred some manual control, but you get what you pay for.

These images straight from the camera, apart from resizing, and a little horizon straightening on #1.

AWB is pretty good, and image quality from such a small sensor is great in good light, but a little noisy in low light.

I am happy to post the original files if required.

Hope this helps.
