Yes, it felt weird to take pics of a stranger. No, I hadn't planned it very well. I'm so used to just improvising, but I need to learn to plan. At least I got us to head for a hotel bathroom later. Wanted more shots in there, but there was a conference and too much traffic in the bathroom.

Nice work Claire. I really like 4, 8,9 and 10. The bathroom photos are interesting, but appear underexposed to me. I'm not a fan of the photos youve shot on an upward angle, but that's probably due to my fussy girlfriend who has drilled into me that it's not a good angle to shoot from.
Your photos certainly prove that the 18-55mm is capable (in the right hands) of producing some lovely photos. Well done.

For the indoor shots I think you need some (or more) fill flash to overcome the lights behind the model. That or try to keep the lights from behind the model.
I can give this advice since I have (and occassionally still) make the same mistake.
I do like the outdoor shots, especially shots 4 and 7.
Just my opinion,

She is beautiful. Nice work. She reminds me of Franka Potente. (http://us.ent4.yimg.com/movies.yahoo.com/images/hv/photo/movie_pix/universal_pictures/the_bourne_supremacy/franka_potente/supremacy1.jpg)

TFP = time for prints; very simplified, you get a free model & she gets prints of the work.
It's been pointed out to me by leony (& all the following blue text is from his post) that "actually in real world where comercial and editorial photographers work it is called free testing. TFP is a web only term and if you use that while talking to a booker at a mid-tier agency in NYC or LA you'll instantly be marked as amateur and then god save the queen."
"Comps are still called that. Things haven't changed that much. For photographers, the cards are called promo-cards.
TFP is ONLY used on the web. It was never used in the advertising or fashion industries. It probably never will either. Here's why:
TFP - Time For Prints. Everyone's time and talent, and prints for everyone. Except what if the images/prints I'm looking for aren't what the model/makeup artist/warderobe stylist/hair stylist are looking for? Then you can't really deliver the prints... and they already put in the time. The issue usually is not with the technical aspect of the image and with the feel/content/mood. Anyone shooting for any magazine can take a sharp and well exposed picture. Not everyone of those photographers can shoot a 12 page editorial for Italian VOGUE. I can't either, for now.
Free Test - exactly that. It's a test. And no one gets paid. If something comes out, good for all - if not, there's no obligation.
Test can be for anything, really. Say I got a new reflector for my studio flash - I need to test it out to see what kind of light it produces, so I call in people who need new images for their portfolios - and we have a test for my new __________ (insert equipment's name here).
I can have a test with a new makeup artist - that is I'm testing their skills so that when a paying job comes along I know if they are up to the speed and wouldn't let me down.
I can test an idea - for example. Like right now I'm in the works of lining up a shoot for a "wild forest" fashon series. This will be a test as I will probably re-shoot the idea with different teams/models while refining the vision. In this case I'm testing my own creative ability and vision.
There is nothing wrong with testing your own technical ability in the medium either, but unless you can guarantee 100% usable images for all involved I would call it a test and not an exchange of service.
There is no negative conotation to the term, it is just not used in the industry. But tell everyone you know to stay away from wedding photographers that make "Model Portfolios in one 4 hour day." F-1 teams don't "Mod" their cars as car entusiasts do. This doesn't mean that car entusiasts don't know what they are doing - some have degrees in physics and other related fields but walking in to a pit on a race course and saying "nice body kit" doesn't quite do it."
More than you wanted to know? ;)

Thanks for all the info, and good luck on your wild forest deal. :D

Haha! Never did hear what came of that. Everything after "It's been pointed out to me by leony that..." was his info. Guess I'd better edit that so it's clearer who said what! ;-)

Thanks for all your comments and I agree I could have done a better job with the indoor shots. We were in a 4-5 star hotel and women kept coming in and out, so had to sneak shots inbetween.
She told me today that she really liked the one with her wearing her hat. She wanted to send that to her boyfriend.

It's exciting to see other peoples work and know how nervous one can get before a shoot. Going into a shoot with a location(s), theme and possibly a stylist is super helpful as it will take any worries away and make the shoot a bit more fun. Aside from practice as much as you can....the only advice I have is to the model to lighten up on the make-up a little. She has a natural beauty and make-up takes that away for me. Good shots!

Retro,
Regarding the make-up. She asked me about that and I told her to use bit stronger than normal. She said she usually hardly wear any during the days. The reason I asked her to make it a bit stronger is because when my friend took pics of me the makeup was hardly noticible. And she had REALLY put a lot of foundation etc on me. In the pics I looked very natural. So, as I'm not too familiar yet with photo make-up, I told this model to wear a bit stronger than normal. In all honesty it was only her eyes that had strong make-up. The rest of her face wasn't much at all. I wore more when my friend took pics of me.
