Second only to Alaska.

Wabasha is located along the Mississippi and has the National Eagle Center. Grumpy Old Men was filmed there also.

Funny thing is that I love Bald Eagles and I have no photo's, and Wabasha is located just a two hour drive away!

I live even closer and have not been there yet.

I drove by a dozen bald eagles and a few goldens on my way home from a hockey tournament before Christmas. Two eagles were feeding on a deer carcass just off the highway and I didn't stop. My wife and I drove by ten eagles and about thirty other assorted raptors on Christmas Eve and I didn't take a single shot.

Maybe the answer is for me to travel to Wabasha (about 870 miles?) to shoot eagles and you can drive out here!!

Wabasha has the eagle center, but I don't think it's a particularly good place for photographing wild eagles. The river is too wide there. Check out Colvill Park (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=colvill+park+red+wing+mn&sll=44.391476,-92.054787&sspn=0.058143,0.136814&ie=UTF8&ll=44.566869,-92.506084&spn=0.007246,0.017102&z=16&iwloc=A) in Red Wing, and Read's Landing (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=read%27s+landing+mn&sll=44.566869,-92.506084&sspn=0.007246,0.017102&ie=UTF8&ll=44.403066,-92.079055&spn=0.007266,0.017102&z=16&g=read%27s+landing+mn&iwloc=addr) for better photo opportunities. They are north of Wabasha on Hwy 61.

Further south, check out the dams along the Mississippi River along the Iowa/Illinois part of the river. You can see the latest weekly eagle count numbers (http://www.mvr.usace.army.mil/missriver/bedweb/EagleNumbers09.htm) done by the Army Corps of Engineers between dams #11 - #21.
