The B&W definitley helps with the cold and edgy feel. The dept of field is perfect. We can clearly see the traveler and the background is blurred enough to keep the attention on her but we can see enough background to see the railroad and get the "traveling the hard way" vibe.

I like the composition and the feel here but I do have one nit. I don't know if it was a result of the conversion but the sky in this shot as is which takes up a great deal of the background is totally featureless. If it weren't for the poles and the wires, you'd have little more than a big white blob there and to me, that detracts from the image as a whole...my eye just seems to center on the big white nothing there in the upper left hand corner instead of on the subject.

same here.... i tried to do a regular black and white but when i did the strong contrast it hit a little harder. i just wish there were clouds that day!!

I like the idea, but as said before.... way too many blown out areas. Nice attempt though.

Good idea but it's much too busy for me. And IMO you should have taken a step to the left and captured more of the tracks and gotten more depth out of that. Just my opinion! :)
