Took this photo of my son and god-daughter together on Xmas day. Please try to ignore the pillow on the top part of the shot.

I used my 580Ex on my 50D. Lens was the Tammy 28-75 f2.8.
EXIF data:
Aperture priority
Tv 1/10
Av 3.2
Evaluative Metering
ISO 1250
Manual flash (I can't remember the settings, though)

I think this is a wonderful shot and that you did very well with the flash. There's an old saying when it comes to flash...the best flash shots are those that look as though no flash was used at all and I feel your shot here falls under that category. Also, I don't think the pillow is a problem at all...to me, the pillow and the blanket make a very nice framing device which immediately brings the views eye right to the two faces (which also happen to form a very nice diagonal). If I had to make a nit about anything, personally I would bring up the contrast and the saturation just a bit...maybe go for that classic "Fuji Velvia" look. Otherwise, for what is essentially a candid, I think this is a very lovely shot. Well done.

Peace,
Jim

I think it's a good picture, but it does seem a little soft. Did you use a tripod? With a 1/10 second shutter speed it's pretty hard to get a crisp shot. From the ISO and aperture I can see why you used the slow shutter. More flash but bounced or diffused to soften it might help with that.

I agree with the other comments about it looking natural, though. The exposure seems right on. Good work. :)

Thanks again for the feedback.

No, no tripod was used. It was really a spur of the moment shot. I think if i had the SS at 1/20, it would be considerably sharper. However I put more concentration into capturing his smile, and forgot to adjust accordingly.

The flash was bounced off the ceiling, with a StoFen on the 580.
