Gorgeous, especially number 4. I got some idea of the size when I realizes that it was on someones shoulder.

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

Well, you could say that I cheated a bit. The local conservatory is having a butterfly exhibit. So they are breeding them and letting them loose in a huge room ! Makes it a bit easier to take picture ;)

These shots are fantastic Sid. I am planning on visiting an indoor rainforest in the near future (they have a butterfly exhibit too) and would love to be able to capture some shots like these. Do you mind sharing what camera settings/lens/lighting setup you used for these shots?
Many thanks,
Nick

Sure. I used the kit lens for all of these pictures. I think that a zoom lens with a longer reach would have helped a lot. I found myself leaning over the railings a bit too much. I was lucky that it was a sunny day, but it would definitely help to have a flash more powerful than the built-in one.
Oh, and keep your eyes open for the kids there. They have a knack for making the butterflies climb onto their hands and sometimes even on their cheeks ! Makes for some really beautiful photo ops.
I'll upload the EXIF information for you later in the day. Kinda in a rush right now.

Thank you very much Sid. I've got the 300D too, I'm interested that you had to use the flash. What ISO and appertures did you use? The EXIF info would be great if you do get the chance!
Cheers,
Nick

Nick:
I've added the relevant exif info for each of the images. I took all the pictures in the Av mode. None of the pictures posted here have flash on but I did take a few others with the flash. (It was cloudy on and off during the day)

Spectacular shots, Sid. I know how hard it can be to get such perfectly exposed and focused butterflies, but you did it extremely well, and with the kit lens. The last one is absolutely brilliant. I'm thinking I will use 75-300 mm with flash from now on. As you say, it's tough to get close to them all the time, as they can fly out of your reach.

Thanks Stan :)
It certainly requires a lot of patience, not just with the butterflies but also the people around you who wanna get close to the butterflies. But, overall, I had a lot of fun that day. That was probably the most pictures I ever took in a day since I got the rebel last month :)

Thank you very much Sid for taking the time to post the EXIF data. Really appreciate it. Its good to see that you were able to get a reasonable shutterspeed using ISO100 and 200 without having to resort to using the flash. Great stuff! I can't wait to have a go myself.
Thanks,
Nick

Wow that looks like it would take a lot of pictures to get a few good ones. I like number 3 because of the contrasting colors.
