ok, my suggestion for the new thread, so guess I need to contribute! ;)

hmmmm... while Go-Karts sound like a blast - maybe a less expensive "walk & shoot" would be best at this time of year in addition to the crappy economy... ?

maybe someplace like Peidmont Park or Virginia Highlands or Athens Botanical gardens (I know.. it's not Atl, but it's free)? it's been quite some time since I was in Atlanta other than the Masquerade, Center Stage, etc... so other ideas welcome of course... places with interesting architecture, lots of people or pets, free events, etc...

and for times - weekend, weekday, morning, afternoon, night?

Well if you are 'brave' and want some fun opportunities we can meet at the varsity and head down to the west end. I know my way around pretty good and there are literally hundreds of places to stop off and get some photos of your car or scenery or run down buildings or graffiti.

Last time I went I climbed in and out of buildings, got inside an old auto recyclers and just had fun. Was just me and my friend.

Anyone up for that? Be prepared to be approached by many people, get weird looks and just general uncomfortable situations. With 5-10 or more of us it really shouldn't be a problem. The best photos and fun came from actually getting inside the buildings and what not.

I am up for planning and organizing. I think a Sunday works best personally. Meet at Varsity, head down to West End, spend some hours and head back to Varsity to eat?

I would be down for that. If we were shooting cars, I would bring mine, just would not want to leave it downtown. Like the idea though and consider me interested!

First Meet Information

Meet will consist of photo walk through Atlanta's West End. There will be opportunities for car photos, building photos and for the adventurous like myself we can climb and 'sneak' in and out of buildings and onto some open lots. One of which is an old automotive parts recycler.

Date: Sunday January 24th
Time: Noon
Location: Varsity - North Ave/Spring Street Location

Park in the back lot so we kind of know who is with us. There is a spot at the end of the lot, right next to I-75 near the garbage cans. Room for about 15-20 cars. Look for a Green BMW Convertible w/ Hardtop or a Beige BMW Sedan. I will get there early and get some food inside. So grab some food or hang out.

We leave at 1pm. I know my way around the city but shooting spots were hit and miss. Last time I pulled over in random parking lot with 4 or 5 spaces and walked to get to buildings. Then parked on the side of the road to get to the recycle center. We will have to wing it or maybe someone with an SUV that doesn't care about getting photos of their car can drive a couple of people?

Those that are coming. Can you list what you are interested in doing?

I will have a new to me BMW convertible that I want to snap some photos of. There are some buildings I know we can hoist ourselves into. There are other places that we can park on the street and walk 1/8mi and simply 'slip' into the lot and get into multiple buildings.

Also if you are coming can you add your name to the list and what you are driving. If we have 10 people but can fit in 3 cars(leave 7 cars at Varsity) it would make things easier I think.

We left my buddies BMW parked in this little side lot for about 20 minutes while we hoisted ourselves into this one building and came back and it was fine :)

Even had open gear bags inside the vehicle :)

I will also be coming. I live in Gwinnett, but my sister lives in downtown. My name is Stephen and I'm probably going to be one of the youngest there. I am 18, a senior in High School. Just to give you an idea of where we are going and what you will have in store for yourself...

Here is going to be the first stop more than likely. 520 Whitehall Street. Notice Graffitti Wall in the Alley... Also the front window and bars are now gone... you can easily hoist yourself inside. Obviously more garbage now unfortunately...

We can explore inside and around all these buildings. There are many entrances we saw but with only 2 of us we didn't want to venture very far. Groups of 3-5 people will be much more safe.

Next stop is just down the road for the guys who want car photos. I personally think it is a good spot with a couple loading bays and some easy to get to graffiti. I am going to TRY and get my car into the alley with the awesome graffiti and even may bring gloves and clean some of the garbage up...

Following the road farther down there are even MORE spots for cars or shoots. Feel free to flash your brights and honk you horn. We can all pull over. End goal we are going to the 1000 block of Avon Avenue. You will see from the overhead there is a large brown building and a large silver building. The silver building is not a building but a cover. It appears that metal car parts were sorted in the brown building, feed to a conveyer and smelted inside the silver covering. There are LOTS more items, trucks, tractors and random stuff now IN this lot. There is literally HUNDREDS of spots. There is a fence but you can easily shimmy through the fence at the gate :)

I don't know if I am brave enough just yet but last time I was downtown with Matt. I passed the Medical Arts building right off 75. Now I have passed it 5 or 6 times... someone busted out the front door glass and you can now get in... It is boarded up and condemned but it looks really really cool. Right off an extremely busy street so I don't know...

I'm new to the forum but it would be totally awesome meeting other photographers in the area. I'm still a noob to photography so maybe I can learn a couple of things too. :>

I'm 20 and I don't have a car because I recently wrecked it... so I will get a ride there or something. Just PM me for more info and I'll be there. It's still on right? Sunday the 25th? And for what I like... I like urban photography and still life. Hopefully I'll meet everyone there.
