Did this earlier tonight. They come into their gym to the song "Bring 'Em Out" so I wanted to get something that gave a sense of emergence.
This is lit with two AB800s outside the door firing into the gym. I had an AB400 gridded with a 10 degree honeycomb lighting the ball. The team was lit with another AB800 gridded with a 40 degree honeycomb.
The natural vignette from the lighting was exaggerated in post.

I like it. It's got "We're serious" written all over their faces. :) Game on!

Very nice! Gets the job done in a very appropriate but artistic way.

All were Alien Bees AB800s except for the light on the ball, which was an AB400.

I wish I had two AB1600s, two AB800s, and one AB400. I have several large softboxes and a stripbox and a bunch of umbrellas. I also have the honeycomb grids. I do a lot of other less "official" light modifiers, too.
These were all shot with direct flash, modified only with the grids.
I also wouldn't mind a couple sets of barndoors.

Love it! Very sweet! What if you got their bodies a bit tighter, allowing very little light to sneak through, except for on the outside of the bulk of the team and around their heads. Would you still have that emergence (w/energy) concept? Just a thought. I love the photo and the idea!

Nice concept, couple of small nits for me.
1. The floor is tilting towards right
2. Feet of the girl on camera right are lost
3. I can see the door hinges, lights witches etc. in the back
4. I think the ball needs a bit more light. For some reason its position is not working for me, don't know why.

I don't mind the door hinges that much. I think it adds to the theme that he has, or the team has, of the song bring it out. Nice picture by the way.

Great portrait. Love the lighting on the ball in the foreground. It's the little details that make a good photo a great one!

Oh I like this alot!
I'm curious.. who's idea was this shot? The teams, or yours?
And if it was yours, did you just tell them to give your "serious look" or
"Bad A$$" look?
I'm starting to get more into taking team shots, and would love to
get the kids to do something different from the typical pose, ya know?

Nice concept and shot.
I love the attitude. Especially the ones standing on the ends with the arms crossed. They got some 'tude going on there ! Well done.
