just got my first flash (580 EXII ) and i want to start using it off camera. what would be my best option in the $200 range to start off with. im shooting with a 40D.

Or, if you are using it on a bracket you can get the Canon off-camera cord for under $100 - that's how I use mine.

Sory I should have been more detailed. I am looking for options to fire the flash remotely, i.e radio, sync cord, etc.. I notices Canon has a sync cord but its only 2' long. i Would like the capability of moving the flash further away than that.

Np ;). I'm sure that somebody somewhere makes synch cords of varying lengths. The problem here though is the "tangle" and "trip over" factor when you have too many cables draped around.

You are probably looking at some sort of radio trigger. I don't have experience in this area, but those will give you most flexibility. And again, you generally get what you pay for. Good luck! :D
