I posted a few shots a while back & it was suggested I take shots from a lower angle. See here http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=56168&highlight=rugby

This is my 2nd attempt. I just had the camera a 20D with 70-200 2.8IS set on the sports mode.

The sun came out just as I they were about to start!!

Are these any better and any more tips would be welcome?

they are playing with the wrong sized ball haha

i guess there were no fights or big hits in this game then?

shame

nice shots tho, reminds me of my childhood playing for eccles, i still play but the ball seems smaller and the tacklings harder

No fights and no big hits monkey wrench. This is Under 7s and it's tag rugby. They have to remove the tag which is on a velcro belt.

Makes for really open rugby. In 3 games this weekend, my boys team scored 21 tries!!! I think my boy scored about 8. One parent joked that he wanted to drug test him.

He's gonna be the next Jason Robinson "IF" I can keep him away from football.

Tackling starts at U9s. My elder boy is a tight head prop and is full of aches and apins after every game.

I just remember that first hit when it was freezing cold - aaah.

Will keep on taking the pics and hopefully get batter.

Yeah when i used to play tig it was basically both hands on the waiste and then u pass the ball.

im a loose head prop myself and u dont need to remind me of the aches and pains 3 broken noses and countless broken fingers lol its a tough sport and your son must be some player!! haha

maybe u could try watching the senior games for the same club and experiment with both ???

That's a good idea I think I'll try that.

tackling here starts at age 6/7 (both league and union). my boys (10 and 11's in league) constantly watch the a-grade games, to constantly get a better feeling for the game. my eldest son separated his shoulder in the opening game last year. while he was lying on the ground, his brother came over and told him that he scored a try. he immediately asked the coach to be put back in... fortunately he didnt go in. he rested 3 weeks and then finished the year with the 2 most tries on the team. :)

they are great shots! i really like the tight crop and lower perspective of the first one in the second group.

how do you feel about them? i definitely suggest watching games from older groups - especially if you can wach and take photos of college or a-grade level (or whatever you call the level that feeds the pro teams). but most importantly - keep taking photos of your son's team. i bet by the end of the season, you'll find that your shots will have the composure and perspective right out of the camera with no editing.
