FlipsidE, question is crucial.
Do you just want a simple camera to have with you always?
I have more experience with the PowerShot A series. I have used the A70 & A80 and like them both. The can take very good pictures. See Masked Duck (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=62023) that I did with the A70 in Macro mode.
My choice in this arena would be the A85 which leaves $ left over for a decent CF card & perhaps Rechargeablle batteries.
To move up a notch I would look hard at the PowerShot S1 IS. I have no experience with it but it looks intriguing with more features. It will push your price piont hard.
Final word.Get something and use it. Looking forward to seeing your pictures posted.

Get a Canon A series............either A85 or A95. For a bit more cash, you can probably get a Canon S series, which will give you a more sreamlined camera. Both are versatile with good image quality.

The recent Canon A series are good. S series is better but more expensive. The S1 IS is a great camera. Or, the Olympus Stylus 500 is a decent camera that also happens to have a water resistant all metal body.
