Wait on the Wild Animal Park. Just went last weekend, the Lion exhibit is being renovated. No big cats to be found period! Cheetahs were gone and the Tiger is always hiding. Everything else was ok.

(If you look up places to hike in LA, a majority of them are quite nice)
Personally I use modernhiker.com to find cool hiking locations/landscape areas in the LA area. It even categorizes the locations by difficulty so you can find some green (easy) spots to have a model go with you for a landscape portrait!

One of my favorite shots. Wasn't that taken from your sun roof? Was this an HDR? If so, how did you do it hand held?

I stopped my car in the middle of that road (convertible), not to mention that that road has pretty much 0 cars driving on it (rather a random road at that part of it) then set my camera to take a 5 exposure HDR and just held the camera over my head, put 2 second timer and did AV mode at f8 and just hoped that I would get a nice series...

needless to say I am happy with the shot and it was dubbed '"The Happy Accident" in a gallery it's hanging in.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I will definitely check out Santa Monica Mountains. I went to UCI Ecological Preserve. In the back, theres a entrance from a neighborhood that has a great little walkway with benches and fountains. Once you go further, you enter the ecological preserve which is very cool. Has trails to walk on and a lot of cacti.

just so you are aware - if you are shooting a model there especially with a strobe, the city security will have you leave unless you have a 400 dollar permit. Happened to me twice.

Anyone got any good ideas for a day trip for my wife and I? I really want to go to a place like Canyonlands in Utah but that's a bit (haha) too far for a day trip. Any good suggestions within a few hours of greater LA area?

Hey there! I might have the thing for you! It's Limestone Canyon in Irvine, so it's quite close. Everyone compares it to the mini-grand canyon right in LA. It's about a 4-5ish mile hike to hit red rock canyon type views. Not as dramatic as Grand cayon but still awesome nonetheless.

The only downside is that you must go on a guided tour as the lands are preserved for ecological and scholarly purposes.

Walrus, it depends on how long a 'day' you mean. Just north of Mojave is the Red Rock area with good shots just after dawn. A little farther up 395 at Lone Pine are some nice rock formations in the Alabama Hills, but that would be an over-nighter.
If you like coastal shots the area around Santa Barbara is nice.

What a coincidence. I just flew into John Wayne Orange County Airport from Seattle. I'd rather fly than drive, that's for sure. But I was coming from Pullman, Washington, on to Spokane, to Seattle.

Laguna looks real nice. My first time here.

Hi So Cal members. This Saturday (6/11) in Fountain Valley is a decent car show. (Mile Square Park) Went the last two years, makes for some nice car shots and it is free. Typically around 200+ show up. They show around 7:00, but they leave around 11:30 or so.

La Jolla was nice, ate on the water.

Stayed in Laguna. Great location, big surf, lot of surfers.

Went to Rodeo Drive and then Hollywood walk of fame.

Great vacation topped off by dumbest move ever.

In order to fly home to NY, flew out of John Wayne to Portland to LAX to NY. Can we say dumb!!!!!

Hello everyone!

I am working with the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse (www.missionplayhouse.org) and we'll be setting up a photography event for photographers only to network, meet, have fun, and shoot at a location not readily accessible.

You're more than welcome to have a meet up at this event as it is free. Even if you won't be attending, it would be great to get the word out there to fellow photographers that are eager to learn and shoot a historic location.

Where: San Gabriel Mission Playhouse

When: July 31, 2011 2:00 - 5:30PM

What: We understand that in order to get the best picture that you can take, you must understand the history of what you’re shooting. For this event, you will be offered a tour around the rich history of the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse followed by a meet and greet and at least 3 hours of free roam shooting around the Mission Playhouse. Please show up on-time!

After the event, the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse will be hosting a contest for the best photo of the day, details below.

Why:
• This is a rare occasion to be able to shoot a place where most photographers are not allowed unless given special permission
• Learn about the rich history of this beautiful land mark in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley.
• Network and trade contact information (Maybe, pick up another shooter for your business)
• Amateur and professionals welcome
• Build your portfolio
• Learn tips from fellow shooters
• Last but not least, have fun!

Who: You the photographer and 1 guest

Cost: Free

Contest: Submit your best digital photo of the event to us at sgmissionplayhouse@gmail.com and we will upload that photo to a contest album. The photos will be uploaded on August 8th, giving 1 week for you photogs to do final edits and to submit your photo to us. Your photos will be “liked” by the fans of the Mission Playhouse and most importantly, photographers like you!

Prize: The photographer with the most “Likes” on their photo will win 2 free show tickets to the event of your choice that will be hosted at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse.
