I’m a long time lurker, first time poster. My story is very familiar by now. I was happily using a film camera (Minolta 7000) when I saw the Canon G1. Wow! I had to have one. After a while, I got approval from the financial committee and bought a G2. Life was good. Canon knows their stuff, what a great camera. Huh, wait a minute here. Focus is slow, and the shutter lag is terrible. Why can’t I get any background blur without using the macro setting? Really(?!), the sensor is that small?
Regardless, I was convinced that Canon was the way to go, so I devised an exit strategy from my Minolta equipment. Over time I purchased an Elan 7, three primes (24/2.8, 50/1.8, 85/1.8 , a 420EX, and a Minolta Dual Scan IV. A digital SLR and good quality zooms would have to wait – too expensive.
Time passes.
Hints to the financial committee about the long term plan.
More time passes.
Wow, honey, I missed that wonderful shot of the kids (we have two toddlers) because of the G2 limitations. I’ll have to use the Elan. Nice shots. Yep, I scan those in someday…..
Time rolls on.
Then, a vacation looms. Camera talk ensues. And out of the blue, the financial committee says “we’ll it seems to be the time, you better buy your DSLR before I change my mind.”
So I’m going to buy a 20D. I’m so happy, I had to finally come out of the woodwork and post.
I mainly take landscape pictures, macros, and portraits & candids of the children. This board helped tremendously with my Minolta transition. Don Ellis showed me what was possible with G series macro. I will figure out how to post pictures and contribute more regularly…. but I won’t challenge in the Belmondo/Scottes posting sweepstakes. Promise.
