Going to B&H tomorrow - 1.4 extender?

I will be going to a client that is literally right next to B&H in NYC tomorrow. I have been wanting to get the Canon 1.4 extender for my 70-200mm lens, also want the Tamron 28-75, but don't have enough cash for that right now.

My question is this, does anyone have comparision shots at 200mm then the same shot with the extender added? Just want to get an idea of how much closer I will be able to get with the extender. Thanks in advance!

Not really a side by side comparison but a couple of shots of the moon might be a good comp.

Not mine. It was some professional shots, maybe Canon sponsored, I didn't really check.

The 1.4 Extender is on my list too, along with either a 100mm Macro or the 85 f/1.8...or BOTH. :p

Well I went to the holy land today, that being B&H, I had been there before a long time ago, but wasn't into photography then, just looking around. It was awesome. They have this Canon section with all of the lenses there for demo purposes. So I asked the guy for the 1.4 extender and 70-200 L lens, he says "What camera body", as they had all of them sitting there, I said rebel. Tried it with and without the extender and noticed a considerable difference in range, so I bought it. I also bought the tripod ring and finally got myself a rocket blower.

It was just fun to see all the various Canon lenses. They had this massive 600mm lens, looked like a small canon ;)

So if you happen to be in NYC and on the west side, definitely stop into B&H, but be warned, it is very easy to spend mucho bucks. Oh and their inventory goes down 3 floors deep, at least that is what the salesperson told me.

Just how crucial is the extender ring when using the 1.4 extender with the 70-200 F4 L. I presume it's required for tripod use. I'm in New Zealand so can't drop into the holy land. Preparing my shopping list as we speak...

I don't believe he said the extender ring. He said the tripod ring. That came with my 70-200 f2.8 IS.

that's okay. The tripod ring is quite useful for either a tripod or monopod. It carries the weight more toward the middle. If you use the tripod socket on the camera, it becomes quite front heavy with a large lens attached.


If you don't plan on using a tripod or monopod, it's not necessary.

Hank- I was in NY a couple of weeks ago and went to B&H. I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven. I told my wife we were going to have to reschedule our afternoon plans, as I wasn't getting out of there anytime soon. She had to drag me out before I maxed out my credit cards.
