why are you leaning toward one over the other?

the 475b looks to be have the same legs as my manfrotto monopod, and so far it has been more than useful, and by my standards it is very solid.

if i could get to see the two tripods first hand it would make the decision much easier however the stats are very similar to eachother with minor varriations.

The Manfrotto 058B (http://www.bogenimaging.us/Jahia/site/bius/pid/6780?kindOfProductCollectionRequest=productDetail&productCode=058B&productDescription=Black%20Aluminum%20Studio%20Pro %20Triaut%20Tripod%20W/Simultaneous%20Or&curBrandId=MAN&market=MKT1&product_from_search=true) is a LOT DIFFERENT from the Manfrotto 475B (http://www.bogenimaging.us/Jahia/site/bius/pid/6780?kindOfProductCollectionRequest=productDetail&productCode=475B&productDescription=Black%20Aluminum%20Pro%20Geared %20Tripod%20W/Geared%20Column&curBrandId=MAN&market=MKT1&product_from_search=true) in the area of the leg locks. Go to each of the web sites I linked to and print the specs. Look VERY carefully at both. The 475B has more or less conventional leg locks while the 058B has a very unique method of loosening the legs using triggers just under the "spider" (where the legs pivot from). There are triggers for each leg and one that loosens ALL THREE legs at the same time. This feature - which I have on my older 3051 - is absolutley fantastic for setting up the tripod.

In addition, the 058B can be set up to be a LOT TALLER than the 475B. This can be extremely useful in some circumstances. Just make sure you have a step stool if you want to use it at maximum height.

the stats are very similar to eachother with minor varriations.

Hmmm:

Manfrotto 475B:
Minimum height: 43 cm
Maximum height: 188 cm
Length folded: 80 cm
Weight: 4,3 kg
Maximum supported weight: 12 kg

Manfrotto 058B:
Minimum height: 44 cm
Maximum height: 217cm
Length folded: 94 cm
Weight: 6,15 kg
Maximum supported weight: 12 kg

So IMO only minimum height and supported weight are even remotely similar...

The 058 has a special leg release that allows you to set the first leg length with one knob at the tripod collar. IMO it's not worth the weight and price it adds.

I'd buy neither, but if I had to choose, I'd go for the 475.

so 5 to 4, i think im going to go with the 475BBefore making your decision based on poll numbers that are essentially in a dead heat (and with only two of the nine responders writing anything at all to support their votes), get your hands on both and make an intelligent decision. THAT is the only way for you to make sure you get the best solution for you.

In my opinion, you need to handle the two to determine how they work for you. The leg releases are quite different and with the weight of these two tripods, that can make quite a difference in how they work for you in the field.

If the poll had been 10:1 for one choice or the other, then things might be different in making your choice from the poll.

Agree.
Belmondo used to have one of these IIRC...
