I received the SD1100 IS for xmas and the SD790 IS. Although I have not used either yet, can anyone's professional opinion assist with which camera might outshine the other. I am a newbie and your help is important to me.

thank you

I don't think there's an awful lot to distinguish the two. The SD790 has a slightly larger sensor which will compensate for the slightly higher pixel count (more pixels, all else being equal, mean more noise in the picture). The larger LCD on the SD790 may be a nice-to-have, as would the slightly wider angle (35 mm vs 38 mm equivalent focal length) it offers. Of course the wider wide means that the long (telephoto) end of the SD790 won't be as long as that of the SD1100. The SD790-s also, as you can see, a little bigger and heavier than the SD1100. Only you can say if that matters to you. Especially if you're just getting started, either will do you fine. If pressed, I think I'd go with the SD790; if I was getting one for my wife though, I'd pick up the SD1100. She places size above all.
