View Full Version : Just took the plunge...

After lurking on this forum for the last few days (and others for even longer), and reading and learning what I could, I just took the plunge and purchased a 20D with a 70-200mm f2.8L IS lens and the 17-85mm IS lens for a walkabout. I also got the BG-E2 grip, so hopefully this will be a functional one. I ordered from B&H by phone, and went through their 'verification' process. My wife was home at the time, and was a bit startled by their phone call. Guess there's no sneaking this one in... :) They say everything will be here on Wednesday.

This is quite a step for me--first DSLR. My current digicam is a Minolta 7Hi, and I'm ready to move up. I guess this is quite a bit of a move up. I'm really looking forward to see the speed differences between these two cameras. The 7Hi sometimes takes its sweet time whilst focusing at full zoom (200mm equiv). I'm also looking forward to the IS capability of the lenses, as well as comparing the amounts of noise between the two cameras (I expect it to be like comparing a Ferrari and a cement truck).

Thanks to all who have posted questions about this equipment in the past, and especially to those who have taken the time to repond.

Hi John, welcome to the forum.
You've made a great choice in camera and lens.
I don't have the 70-200 f2.8 but I'm sure it's an awesome lens.
You're going to love IS and I believe the 20D has low noise at higher ISO.

Looking forward to your first pics.

From what I've read, and the sample I've seen posted, the 20D should have much less noise than my 7Hi. Pics taken on the 7Hi at ISO 800 are practically unusable due to noise. I've salvaged a few ISO400 images, but not many. It takes quite a bit of tweaking in PaintShopPro + the Imagenomic noiseware plugin to tame my 7Hi's noise.

I've taken quite a few shots on my 10D at ISO 800 and, with Neat Image, they are very usable.
The 20D, according to all reports, is superior in noise reduction to the 10D. So, to coin a phrase, you're laughing. :)

Have fun.

Hello John and Welcome, boy when you jump in you really jump in I have been shooting with my DRebel for about 2 months now and just in the last weeks have I started getting my "L's". You should really love that 20D I am hoping to upgrade to one soon.

heh...yeah, I guess that is jumping in. :D

As for the "L" glass, I learned these a long time ago: "Buy the best you can afford, and only cry once." or "Buy me cheap, buy me twice." ;)

Well, the credit card is still smoking... The water I tossed at it immediately turned to steam... I'll probably need tongs to pick it up... :(
