I bet one thing is that someone here will tell you to turn the ISO up to enable more aperture and DOF and higher shutter speeds. Lots of people here think nothing of using 1600 or even 3200 ISO and then cleaning up noise.
Just an observation as I'm strictly an amateur but learning a bit about soft focus issues.
Are you using single focus point? Hand held or tripod? What lens? Is it IS? Is the IS on?
ETA some DOF factors
f/2.8 for 50 ft, the DOF is 2.45 ft., that's 1.19 in front and 1.25 in back.
f/5.6 " " 5.18
f/8 7 ft.

Try shooting a static object to illiminate motion blur as the culprit ?
Higher ISO and shutter speed may have fixed this image.
I don't think ISO 1600 would be needed,. but if you were at ISO 400 the shutter would have been nearly doubled and I don't think youd' see any additional noise.
Also check your custom function settings,. see if AFpoint expansion is on.. that could be messing things up,..
Lastly, would have been good to get focus point on his face.

It took me a good while to get decent (to my eye) images from the MkII having come from a 10D and most of it was due to me not setting the camera up properly, there are far more options plus the change in button sequencing to get used to and it took me some time to re-orientate myself. Having done so though, the layout of the MKII is more intuitive and I finf now you can do a lot of the changes just by feel.
To me that looks like motion blur rather than a focus issue. What lens? What focus mode? What IS if any?

Otta,
Glad to see you found the forum.
As CDS said, it would definately help if the face was the focus point. At 2.8, the DOF s really shallow and the players arm is far enought away from his body to affect the overall focus. There is an amazing lack of noise at ISO400 on th MKII and even at 800. Up the ISO and the shutter speed, close it down a stop. Should give you the results you want.
