i've been looking for a new lens. both of my lenses only go down to 4.0 and i would like to go a little lower and get some shots with a shallower dof. this lens just seems so cheap to me and i was wondering if anyone knows if it is a decent lens or not? thanks!

Yup, the 50mm 1.8 will serve you well. It's fast, sharp and won't break the bank.
But if you can afford it, the 50mm f1.4 is even better! :)

I bought it and it is a great lens. Arguably one of the best bargains.

And here is a link to a comparison (http://www.photo.net/equipment/canon/ef50/) of the two lenses.
Arguably, the 350$ 50/1.4 is better than the 75$ 50/1.8, but it's not 5 times better
Best regards,
Andy

I purchased the 50mm f/1.8 last week, and I'm quite happy with it...

I can also recommend this lens. A great bargain, certainly, but also very effective.

If you are ready to spend more, then the Tamron 28-75/2.8 XR DI for 330 $ would make a great upgrade of your Canon 35-80!

Yup I got it and all I can say is you can't get any better bang for the buck than this lens. makes a fantastic portrait lens. what with the 1.6x factor you've got a 90mm equilv. portrait lens.

Stoney,
I'm afraid I have to disappoint you. It's only 80 mm equivalent.
Still a great portrait lens

Andy

I bought the 50/1.4 just because I do wedding portraits and I wanted a little better bokuh background. But my hubby got the 1.8 so they are both great lenses. You won't be disappointed...but B&H sells the 1.4 for $310, not $350:)

85mm is good for portraits. 80mm is very close to 85mm anyway.
But I my first EOS EF lens is 50mm f/1.4.

"Is it a good lens?" Just look at 90% of the user signatures on here. You will see that many own that lens

The 50mm F1.8 is my favorite lens :)

Just like everyone else said, it is a great lens. Best buy out there. It is real sharp and the colors are great. I was skeptical when I bought it too, but it is really a nice lens.

I recommend the 1.8 to any one that is on the budget. If you can afford the 1.4 get that. Its my favorite lens. Its my walk around lens. I think I do about 90% of my shooting with it.

I've had the original 50mm F1.8 for 10 years now. I've sold camera's, other lenses, moved to digital P/S (briefly) but at no point could I bring myself to sell this lens.
The optics on the MkII version are reported to be just as good as my MkI so for the price it is truly a bargain!

Its the first lens I bought, to compliment the 18-55 kit lens.
This was one of my first images, taken on Monday, about an hour after buying the 50mm F1.8.

Obviously I've mucked around with the colours, but pretty much straight off the card. I even had the camera set to 400 ISO which was a lot higher than neccessary.

well i have had my 20D kit and 50/1.8 since valentines day. i could hardly pass up the nifty after reading so much on it. to be honest it is on my camera most of the time.

were the first pics i put up here for critique. both using the nifty.
then i woke this morning and hit BH as i do most mornings.
and well i had to think about it for about 5 minutes and then i had to. they had a MKI in the used section for 150. so i now have the MKI and MKII. well the MKI will not be here til mid week... and the MKII is spoken for provided the MKI is all it is cracked up to be.
i chose the nifty due to its price and high marks around the web.

The 50/1.8 is a gem especially considering the price. For the price of a nice dinner out, you get incredibly sharp pics although the build quality is pretty dismal. If you can afford the 50/1.4 however, go with that. Better overall image quality, better build quality, faster, and MUCH nicer bokeh.

Just bought the 50mm 1.8 tonight, and I LOVE it! :) What a great lens.

I just did an entire wedding bridal portrait session AND a Motocross Supercross race (media credentials on the dirt) with the 50mm 1.8. Such an awesome little lens. I'm about to upgrade to the 1.4 just for the faster motor and quite operation, but it's amazing how little I use my 28-75 2.8 zoom anymore. The nifty fifty is just that good.

I just got my 50 1.8 Mk1 (same optics at the 2, as someone stated earlier) and I love it.
I highly doubt this will leave my camera for much other than landscape shots and sporting events where I can't get close.
Get it! The mk2 is too cheap to not get and if you really dont like it you can sell it for what you bought it for.
