I just ordered the 100-400mm L because I had more money this month than I anticipated... I am insane...
I can't believe I did that... I'm sure when it gets here Wednesday I'll be OK, though

I'm sure I will -- mainly because of the wonderful people here. I was going to go for the 70-300 DO until I looked around here and realized just how much better a lens the L is, and for only about $200 more.
Funny, I bought the 20D with the 24-85 and the 75-300 thinking "That should hold me off for quite a while... until I can get a really nice zoom telephoto in 6 months or a year." Before I knew it I'd gotten the 50mm 1.8, the 10-22 EF-S, and now an L... whew! :)

Personally I prefer the push/pull.

I have used mine for about 2 weeks now and I have learned to love it the only tricky part is setting the friction so that it does not move to easy but smoth enough to get the shot when you see it. here is a picture with mine taken at my son's wrestling tournament.

I just received it... this is one FAST sucker! I can't believe how quickly it focuses (then again, my only other telephoto experience was with the 75-300 USM III). It's a beaut!
Now, why didn't somebody tell me that it weighs in at about 500lbs? ;)

The 100-400mm is my lightest lens!

really,. I was used to shooting with the massive 500mm prime,. or my old Sigma 50-500mm Zoom,. and even the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS which also weighs a bit more than the 100-400mmL,.. so when I first picked up the 100-400mm, all I could think of was how damn light it felt!

I really like the push/pull design. It didn't take long at all to get used to. The weight isn't too bad. I've taken it on a 5 mile hike attached to my 1D MarkII and got some nice birds.

The push/pull design is a little odd, but my old (ok, my dad's) Minolta tele was the same so it's no big deal.
Hmmm... so basically we had to work most weekends (this year) re-racking servers and stuff... now that that's stopped all of the past 3 or 4 weekends have had rain, including this one coming up. I haven't taken so much as ONE good shot (I've played around, but nothing noteworthy)... I think I'm going to cry... My new L... will stay in its case unless I can finally go to the zoo (3rd weekend of trying).
Have I mentioned I live in LA... where it's usually sunny? aaaaargh!!!![/rant]
