I'm thinking of buying lenses for my 20D, since I'm still using the 18-55mm that came with the kit. My question is, should I get a set of lenses that would cover a complete range.. or do I get a 100-400 L lens for now and save up for other L lenses in the future?

What type of photography do you intend using the lens/lenses for ?
Wildlife, portrait, general, sport ?

I use my camera mainly for sports (mostly racing).. also for wildlife and outdoor shots...

The 100-400L is a very capable and flexible lens. I have it and it's my favourite lens.

I don't shoot much in the way of sport but I think it would be useful for outdoor sports. Not fast enough for indoors.
Check out some of the posts by KennyG and RFMSports for motor sport.
Very knowledgable people in the motor sport department.

Decisions.. decisions..
If I get the 100 - 400, there's going to be a gap from 55 - 100.. I also want lenses that cover the full range.. but then again..

Just an idea, but if cost is a concern, take a look at the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 Xr Di and Sigma 80-400 OS, both of which can be bought for slightly less than the cost of the Canon 100-400L alone. This will leave almost no gap and you could just use the kit lens just for wide angle. There are tradeoffs, but these are all good lenses. The Canon probably has the edge if you don't mind it's push-pull zoom, and the autofocus on the Sigma is slower beause it's not an HSM lens.

well you could get a sigma 50-500 i dont know others opion of this lense no where close to L but i like it and with the 2x TC gives me 1000mm on a 1.6 = 1600mm but it is heavy so tripod is a must

If you don't really need 400mm, 70-200s are popular lenses and all of them (f2.8, f2.8IS, f4) are very good. Then your gap will be 55-70 instead of 55-100.
