Some older Canon cameras - such as the Digital Rebel 300d - don't have Vista-compatible drivers. What camera do you have?

Well, I'm just looking too and have to guess since I'm not really sure what's going on ;).
What software have you installed on the laptop with Vista - DPP? Or is it some other editing program? I assume that you are attempting to set up your dSLR in tether mode so the image immediately apprears on (laptop) screen? I've never done this myself, so just brainstorming.

Exactly which s/w do you use on the XP laptop that shows the image the moment you've snapped the picture?

sorry I'm not for sure what you are asking me on the s/w, I open the zoom browser on the lap top and the same on my other computer where it works just fine. I'm thinking it just isn't compitable with the vista since it works fine on windows XP.

OK - now I think I understand.
Perhaps you are correct. I have zoom browser (don't use it anymore) but only used it on a machine with XP. Although it really isn't that old, and I'd think it should function with Vista.
Can you view ANY of your images on the Vista laptop at all, say, after you've downloaded them either by cables or with a card reader?

Does your XT 350 show up in the list of Vista plug and play devices? If not, I don't believe Vista will recognize it as a valid device to read from.

The one other thing to try is to go to the Canon site and find your camera and download the latest software. Some software will have Vista-compatible updates, but I imagine for the older cameras you may not get the latest. Worth a try though.

ok I think I found the problem, I went into the canon update canon download and I need the EOS Capture for the vista and it isn't compitable with the vista and there are no up dates for that so it just isn't compitable so I guess I can't use the lap top, Thank you so much for your help.

Sorry, that sucks. Is it just the drivers for your camera that won't work with Vista? There are a lot of Vista users here, and I've never heard of a basic incompatibility with Canon software, but I don't use the software, so I can't say from experience. Hopefully, someone who does tethered shooting with the EOS software and Vista can notice this thread and chime in.

A check of the Canon web site's download library (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct) shows there is a Vista driver for the XT/350, so if you have that driver installed, you then need to also install all of the software on the Canon disc that came with the camera. It takes a combination of those Canon programs to handle what you want, and all of them need to be installed.
If you don't have that disc any more and still want to have images from the camera show up on your computer screen as they're taken, there's another program that can handle that job -- DSLR Remote Pro from Breeze Systems. (http://www.breezesys.com/DSLRRemotePro/index.htm) That software costs more money to buy, but it's free to try for a few days. You might try downloading that program and see if it does what you want.

Thank you for your help, I have all of my software that came with my camera and I did down load those on to the lap top with vista than I also went to the canon download library and done the up date and I still can not get it to work, I think I'm going to use my daughters boyfriend lap top that has window xp and see if it works on that and just use that one for right now. I'm wanting a new camera but that will just have to wait for a bit.
I want to thank the ones that took the time out to help a old lady that knows nothing about computers.

You should really get a card reader for you camera instead, no problems with mine using a card reader. I haven't hooked up my camera to either xp or vista, but the 350d should be compatible
As far as I know, some other people are having problems with the USB ports, in that it mysteriously disconnects from your pc, i.e. it is not recognised by vista, even though just moments ago it was working fine.
Try disconnecting it, then connecting it up a few times to see if Vista makes the hardware connect sound event. If it does, then it should be fine

Card reader won't do much good for tethered shooting ;)

Thank you, I love that breeze pro it would be worth the money to me, I don't know much about computers and this software is very easy and simple to use.
Thank you all for your help but I went into the canon forum and down loaded the software to the lap top and install my software that came with the camera and it still would not work but when I downloaded the breeze pro it worked just fine so I think I will go with that program.

I've used my XT tethered with Vista with no problem. I used the EOS Utility, clicked the "Remote Shooting" or whatever it is button and took pictures. No problem there. I'm not sure what's up with yours. :shrugs:

I use EOS Utility with Vista also, no problems. Keep checking the download page as new versions and updates don't seem to have a specific timeline for deployment.
