I'm not shure about the right place for post this but, since there are so many EOS users searching for the best storage/viewer device, there it goes:

Epson has announced today (in Japan) the first firmware update for the EPSON P2000 - or PhotoFine Viewer. It comes with lots of improvements like: support for bigger files (up to 17,8 MP) like the 1DS MkII (and the N*D2x) ,support for RAW files for many others cameras like Ollyes E-1 and E-300, Minolta and Pentax. And many other improvements for video files playback, like upgrading the actual limit of 1.5 Mbps/24 fps. rate to 2.5 Mbps/30 fps. I'm translating all the press release and can't say more details.

As soon as I finish the translation I'll post more details like when the firmware will be available, how to download it, etc...

Sorry about my sometimes not clear English .I just want to contribute in some way to this great forum and all the great people here.

Digitalmono, thanks for the heads up on the firmware.
Sounds good.

You already can print direct from the device without the update. No mention about the Picture Bridge.

The download will be possible as usually done with the cameras. With a Compact Flash or SD card with 32MB or more and will be available (in Japan) next friday (March 18th).No mention about the availability on other countries yet. I mean, a download guide in other languages than Japanese.

you can print 'usb direct print', not pictbridge. good luck finding a non-epson printer which supports it. we use a few canon cp330's onsite and would like to be able to print from it directly. generally we use laptops, but we don't always get space - especially for skate comps...

It would also be nice if it includes the ability to zoom on RAW files. This was the one issue I had with it.

Thank you Digitalmono for the update. Keep it coming.

Don't apologise about your English, it is a lot better than my Japanese :)

I'm glad to see they are actually producing firmware updates, as I wouldn't have been at all surprised if they had just left it as was.

Only thing I would really like to see is PictBridge support as well. I'm not bothered about video stuff, but zooming of RAW (well, the JPG inside) would be nice.

Cheers

Ian

I certainly look forward to that upgrade. Since I got the 1Ds MKII, I basically stopped using it. I've only been shooting raw and those are just too big for it.

Sounds great since I have a unit on the way in the mail.

to those who have the unit, maybe you can help me. When I connect it to my notebook (pc) via usb, the screen on the epson gives me a message that it is connecting and not to disconnect. That never goes away. I can transfer images from it, but not see anything else on the epson screen.

Is that normal?

It would also be nice if it includes the ability to zoom on RAW files. This was the one issue I had with it.According to the documentation this is because the image displayed for RAWs is just the embedded JPEG information, not the RAW data. Not sure how true this is, but that's what the documentation says.

My P2000 has arrived at the shop today - I decided to buy one even though it will not zoom RAW (but we await the upgrade). Even without this it is still a great package.

Absolutely normal. You can't use it as a viewer while it's connected to a PC. You can transfer files in both directions.

Best regards

My Japanese is a bit rusty, does anyone have a translation, or an alternative page??

it's a bit tricky to update. when you run the .exe, it makes a pvfirm1 folder. you have to put this folder in the root of the card - either sd or cf. turn on the unit holding the 'Ok' button. it will say 'do not disconnect from AC. keep holding ok and power until it says it's starting to flash to version 2.02 then you can release the buttons

Update works fine here.

Main new feature for me (10D user) is you can now get a histogram for both JPEGs and RAWs. Histogram is purely a brightness distribution, but it is better than nothing. :)

Had no problem with the update from the Epson Japan site. There are some links on www.luminous-landscape.com for both the update and thorough instructions in English.

Just did the update also. Once I figured exactly where to copy the file onto the card, It was a piece of cake. Looking forward to the increased functionality.

Thanks, blackviolet.

np - it helps travelling to japan often and having lots of local friends :)

sadly, there is no pictbridge support  !!!! but... the firmware makes the unit much more stable, and handles bigger files better for all file types. it seems faster, too.

Sorry guys! I was willing to offer help with the translation as soon as the firmware update arrived online but, I went to Tokyo to attend the Photo Imaging Expo PIE 2005 and couldn't even do my own download. Fortunately, the guys at the EPSON'S booth were ready to do it for the visitors/owners. The update works fine. I had a chance to test it on the Canon's booth right after shoot a sample with the 1DS MkII. When I tried to do the same with the D2X, all I got was: "Sorry, but we are not allowing the visitors to shoot with their own CF card"!

Regards

Notice the charming leather case...

Mine appears to have updated OK, although it worried me for a second when the language defaulted back to Japanese. Sadly still can't zoom RAW.
