Hello,
After 4 years loyal service my Powershot S10 has developed a problem, I wonder if anyone can help?
When I switch on the camer the lens pops out a bit as usual, but then proceeds to withdraw again leaving the LCD displaying E28.
Can anybody tell me what this means? Canon weren't very interested, they just wanted a cheque for 150GBP to look at the thing.
All bateries are powered and charged etc...
Cheers.

did you ever resolve the e28 with your camera?

No, I didn't. After scouring the internet it seems that this error message tells the canon engineers something but they aren't willing to reveal what or how to fix it. £150 is uneconomical, so I have to buy a new camera...!
Not necessarily a Canon either.

E28! I bought my camera in early 2000 when it debuted in Canada. And today, after shooting a ton of pictures the previous day, the e28 pops up and from what I'm reading on the net, the camera is now a paperweight?
One post I saw hinted E28 implied something was wrong with the shutter. It's truely a sad day though. This camera did take almost 11000 pictures in it's life, so I can't be too angry, but I'm certainly disappointed about a forced upgrade and the fact that I can't pass this camera on to someone else now and spread some Canon joy.
Anyone solve the E28 mystery?

"Anyone solve the E28 mystery?"
I did a internet search and came to this page. I was hoping to find some answers, but 150 pounds to fix it is just criminal. That is when I decided to fix it myself by banging my powershot S10 on my desk. My camera now works. I do not recommend my method for fixing the camera, but it does indicate a mechanical problem.

I seemed to have caused a E28 error cleaning my lens. My camera would turn on ok but the lens would come out then retract back in straight away. I managed to fix this problem by forcing my lens to full extension and holding it there.

How did you manage to do that? I've had mine for 1.5 years and am not ready to buy a new one...

I got this E28 error too. Mind you, I've put my s10 through a lot over the last 3 years, and I've been secretly hoping that it will die so that I can justify an upgrade.
I opted for the "thump it" approach detailed by "E28_sucks". However I thumped it onto the palm of my hand - bottom down (just enough to hurt a bit). It seems fine now.
However after I 'fixed' my camera, I noticed that there's more info on this at:

Thanks to the trail blazers who conquered the E28 error by giving their cameras a thump. I would like to report that Taylorch's instructions worked perfectly and the camera is back to being a happy snappy.

My S10 also exhibited this highly informative E28 error message. I turned the control to the first notch to take a picture, the lens extends. The E28 shows up, and the lens retracts.
Leaving the camera in the on position, I thumped it three times on the USB side, as indicated above, and the problem went away. For now...

I smacked my S10 gently twice with the monitor side on the palm of my hand......and miracle...it works again....;)
So it really seems to be a contact problem....

Guess what - another successful repair of an S10 showing the E28 error code by two thumps on the end.
Thank you to the legion of engineers who created this fix!

Hey THANKS TO ALL WHO POSTED!!
I bought a second S10, for a friend. It has the evil error 28 message.
SO I will tackle it and Let you all know!!
I have had my s10 for a while and done some work personally in the past.
I to ran away from the RIDICULAS $$. They want to charge. I did some home work, ON I.
I tracked the parts company and called them ordered direct for the cf cared door and battery door. LESS THEN $20.00 delivered here in US.

I've heard about that one before, the E28 error. Like the others said, shaking / tapping the camera often seems to work.
I can imagine how it goes if you go to a repair shop:
- "My camera has a problem, error code E28".
- "OK, that will be 150 pounds. Let me have a look at it."
- "Here's my camera and 150 pounds."
*tap tap*
- "The problem is solved. Thanks for visiting us."
- "Eehhhh..... What?!"

Just found this forum because mine camera just started showing E28 after 4.5 years of use.
Whadya know - one thump in the palm of my hand and it works again - woohoo!
Cheers guys! I guess this just goes to show that the 'if-all-else-fails-then-kick-it' attitude to problem solving may not be such a bad way of approaching it after all.
