Hi,
I have a problem. I would like to change my Canon EF 28-105/3,5-4,5 into something with light 2,8. I started reading some links about it and the best proposals are:
Tokina 28-70/2,8 and Tamron 28-75/2,8
The scores vary from author, but I need to know what is the best for my 20D and EOS 3.
Would you post me your oppinionin this case?

with the gear that you already have i would stick with canon 24-70L glass

...canon 24-70L glass
... which is almost 3 times more expensive than the Tamron ...
Tomasz, I don't know about the Tokina, but I do have the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 and it is an excellent alternative to the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L. You'll find a lot of very happy users across this and many other photography forums.

I've read that the particular Tokina you mentioned is not that good. Though I have also read that the 28-80 f2.8 is pretty good.

well my reason for going with the canon 24-70L was 1. 4 extra mm 2. 77mm filter (which i have a lot of ) 3. stopped all the way down the canon is a lot better than tamron and after reading all the reviews on different sites about and compairing these two lense i came to a concludion that it would be worth spending the extra bucks it was tough because price wise the tamron is worth it but then i ask myself if i got the tamron would i consider buying the canon later the answer was yes so why waste the money get what you want as you can see below i have already wasted a lot of money buying not so good lense now looking at replacing them all

DSMITH131, I understand you. What you say, in another words is - buy the best there is in order not to spend more money in the future, buying the inferior product now and exchanging it for the best later. This is one approach and there are many people who will agree with it.
The second approach says - buy what suits you just fine. There is no question if the Canon is better than Tamron, everybody know that it is in just about everything - the build quality, the optical performance, the AF speed and accuracy etc. But the Tamron is the best when it comes to price / performance ratio - for many people this is the most valuable criteria. Most people (amateurs, not pros) either cannot afford lenses like that Canon 24-70 f/2.8L, or do not want to spend that kind of money on a single lens - especially when there are such wonderful alternatives from third-party manufacturers. Most amateurs can live with the disadvantages of the Tamron - I can and I'm very happy with this lens. Do I want to upgrade to Canon ? Definitely. Will I ? Definitely not, at least not in the near visible future.

I bought the Tamron yesterday, very happy so far. $345 in shop with a $40 rebate, I could buy FOUR of them for the 24-70L. If I ever go pro I know what I'll upgrade to, until then this is a sweet piece of glass and will work just fine for me!

Guess I like this lens a bit more than Mike did so far.
I noted in his review that he kept calling it a $400 lens. I hope he didnt pay that much =(
I dont have a problem with reverse zoom, and this is my first lense that even HAS a hood so I'm in no position to bash how small it is. Others have said it 'feels' plasticy to them, I was just the opposite, this lens feels fine and sturdy to me. I'm used to low end consumer quality lenses like the Canon 18-55 tho.

oh... many thanks. AS you may see I prefer using primes like 28,50,85 so Tamron is the best alternative for CANON 24-70 fro the cost point of view. And after reading some more info o the other forums it seems the is definately better than TOKINA. Ithink I will order Tamron this weekend .....

I, too, own the Tamron and love it -- it's my main walking around lens. When I bought it, the price at B&H was $399, with a $30 rebate from Tamron. That's why Mike called it a $400 lens, because earlier than when I bought it, the price was still $399 but there wasn't a rebate. Nowadays, Tamron has dropped the price AND they offer a larger rebate. :-(
I find it feels very sturdy, gives me great pictures, and even though I wish it went as short as 18mm and as long as 100mm, it is still my lens of preference.
Until I win the lottery, that is, or some unknown wealthy distant relative dies, leaving me their entire estate. :-)

thats good - im glad you like the lens.. it is all about personal expectations - but mine are somewhat high and i shoot ive shot a fair amount of high end L glass over the years. some 3rd party glass does do well, like the tamron 90mm & 180mm macro's which are just amazing lenses...
the reason i refered to it as a $400 lens is because that is roughly what street on it was - no i did not buy it, i borrowed it from a friend
reverse zoom to me is odd... its like putting a shutter button on the left
grab a quality L lens, even something non-L like the 28-135IS from canon - you'll feel the differance in them
if you are only comparing it to the 18-55 kit lens - then yes, this is a HUGE improvment. my expectations are a bit higher though and i use my gear in a variety of harsh enviornments and expect the best from it. i would still however call this a consumer lens - which works well for people like you who are upgrading from the 18-55 but i do make side money w/ my gear, think of it as a part time job - so i strive for the best and expect the best from my gear

I think you guys should study th prices here in good old "rip-off" U.K.Got my Tamron 28-75 this morning £249 & that is the cheapest I could find it in the U.K.! Do some research on the various review sites it compares very favourably with the canon.

yan i can tell you i do photos on a weekly basis at a local track i needed a night time lens so i bought what i could afford and tokina was it well after usen it for a few weeks i learned it was very slow focusing and i got about 1 out of ever 4 pics in focus and i used it all last year then i bought a 50-500 sigma and i am overly happy so i decided if it focuses fast id try the 70-200 2.8 sigma and it worked very good so then i decided before the start of this year i needed a lens for winner circle so i bought the 24-70 2.8 sigma and ive used it at a few indoor races with great results.
