Just for fun, let's say all your Canon gear gets stolen. Your insurance gives you full retail replacement cost in the form of a check. Do you replace it with the same body? Do you replace it with the same lenses? Do you switch to Nikon or something else?

I love my Canon, but I might pick something with in body IS and built in wireless flash. So Pentax or Sony maybe?

I'd pick up a 5D MkII and another 35L. Then the fun would begin all over of replacing the rest.

You bet

Go straight to the 1 series for primary cameras--and not be stuck with the stuff that was good enough to get by with at the time.

Gee, that's awful. And I'd probably cry first. In this economy, who knows? I may have to feed my kids? :( But if I have to spend the money on gear, I'd get the 5D II and 24-70, 70-200 2.8 IS, 17-40, 85 1.8 . . . stop, I'm just saying what I already have. . . . So, I guess just add the 5DII and forget my 5D and 40D.

I would get a 5D classic, replace my 17-40, 24-105, 70-200, 135, 1.4x, 300 4IS, 100 Macro, 580EX, etc. With the rest of the $$, I would wait to see what Canon has up it's sleeve for 1Ds IV.

If I lost it all Id take the money and replace my gear with this

http://www.unplggd.com/uimages/unplggd/2008-02-14kodak.jpg

and then take the rest of the money and head south for the rest of the winter, getting tired of the cold and snow up here. In truth Id replace it with more Canon, Ive always had good luck with Canon and for the shooting I do I see no reason to change now.

I'd get myself a D700, the new weather sealed 50mm f1.4 and maybe the 105mm VR macro...

That would be a nice start. :D

Then I'd look at the 14-24 f2.8 and something for the long end...

airfrogusmc

I'd get the same stuff with the exception of 2 5DIIs in stead of the 2 5Ds I now have.

Now if Leica had the sensor problems worked out in the M series I'd be gone.

That's nice of your Insurance company, unless it was a hypothetical.

My insurance company want to replace my 350D with a 1000D, which I will fight and hopefully replace with a 450D kit which I will sell before un-boxing.

I'd like to buy a D700 but it's a bit out of my price range, I'm thinking a new 5D with 12 months warranty and a 24-70L. Might as well do it right this time around.

I've used Nikon gear from time to time and have liked what I could do with their latest offerings. However, I think I would replace my kit exactly as it is but with current offerings. 1D Mark II would become 1D Mark III, 600mm f/4L would become 600mm f/4L IS, etc.

The 1V-HS is insured for original value. I'd replace it with a 300mm f/2.8L IS if I didn't already have that lens (it's probably the next big lens purchase).

For all you nikon people, why not sell what you have now and move? With the for sale forum here, it's EASY to sell gear and move w/o a huge loss... I don't get why you'd stay here if they have what you need there and you want it....

anyway, personally? I'd get the 5Dii, a 1Dii (instead of the 40D) then replace all my lenses except the 70-200 I think. The 24-105 might be swapped for a 24-70 again as well. But yeah, I'm pretty close to having my ideal kit. I'm just waiting for the 1Dii prices to drop a bit more and sell my 40D for one. The 70-200 would be kept if money were no object, but right now I'm thinking I'd need that money for the 1Dii.

What's wrong with that? The 1000D is pound for pound a better camera than the 350D was. Insurance companies owe you "like kind and quality" which you are getting and more already with the 1000D.

But seriously I would switch to Nikon as well.

Not because i need to, but because its hypothetical and fun.

And I have spoken to 4 out of 5 Bay Area Olympic photographers that used Nikon in place of there Canons at the Bejing Olympics because of various reasons that were obvious to working pros.

Its nice to have Loyalty to a multi-billion dollar corporation... but i just know whats best and would rather have it if i could start over.

It's nothing to do with loyalty for me, I just own what's best for me.

It would be great for me if I could replace my Canon gear with Nikon gear. I get a NICE discount on all Nikon camera gear through my job. But there's nothing for me in Nikon's lens lineup, so I shoot Canon. Not that I'm unhappy with my Canon gear... at all.

Probably a D3 and D700, because both are FF and the trickle down of pro features on the D700 is not as bad as from the pro Canon bodies to 5dmk2 or 50d.
Although thinking about it now I would probably hunt down whoever stole the gear and beat them to death with the 70-200!! :)

aqua_regia
1st of January 2009 (Thu), 22:38
I'd keep all the lenses but upgrade the body to a 40 or 50D. I guess that means I'd have to part with a lens, though, since the upgrade would require extra money. I guess the 10-22 would have to wait to be repurchased, then (or maybe I'd give the tokina a shot).

This is all assuming that my wife would allow me to respend this money, though.

What reasons did these photographs give for switching, and do you have any idea as to why other professionals don't find the reasons as obvious as these photographers?

The most popular reason was the 200-400.
They said it was the best sports lens for the light they were available with.
Other reasons were that the Nikon on site service center in Bejing was way faster than the Canons.

I would get a similar body to the one lost and go all prime.

There's something about prime lenses that is attractive. I don't know what, but I feel like getting rid of my zooms and think more about composition than twisting the barrel of my lenses.

Agreed.

I'd get the best camera body I could, either a 1-series or 5DII, and one very good lens, probably another 24-105 as that's what gets the most use from me. Then, I'd fill in and replace as able, 17-40 first, a good macro next, and so on.

I love my 40D, but this opportunity to upgrade the body would be too good to pass up. It's easier (for me) to replace lenses one at a time than it is to put out the money for that level body all at once.

I would upgrade my 400D and kit lens to the 450 and kit lens. Or the 40D - same lens.

I would be tempted to go further, but thats probably where it would end up. Going full frame would mean too many added costs in lens upgrades. Or giving up more ranges than I would care to atm.

Funny story about the 2008 Copperstate..

I've attended the last four but wasn't sure I'd be able to make '08. I found out at the last minute that I was going to be able to attend so I did some digging on the website, figured out who the Official Photographer was and emailed him like two days beforehand asking if he could use some help.
Got a positive response and ended up as shooter #2 for the weekend.

I learned a lot about shooting in an organized fashion and documenting the who, what, where, etc... It was much more PJ than I had expected it to be. I also learned that my reporting / interviewing skills are sorely lacking so that's an area I need to work on.

I would definatly take a LOOK at Nikon, but with the higher price it's unlikely I'd do the switch. I'm very happy and accustom to Canon anyways.

I would however get a 40D body (maybe 5D classic if I could pinch the pennies) would get the same lenses again and flashes.

I tried to build a garage a few years ago. I started with an Estwing model 700 deluxe framing hammer. A real sweet hammer. Well halfway through my project Estwing introduced the model 701 super deluxe framer. I immediately ran down to the HW store and traded hammers. Wow, I was on clowd nine! Until I read an issue of consumer reports and they rated the Binford 8008s as the best hammer. I was devistated. I gave up on the project. I just could not keep up with the technology.

Used 40D since they are so cheap right now and 70-200 IS and Sigma 18-50 F2.8. I love that little bugger. If there's enough, a 430EX but I'd go ahead and jump on the L upgrade. I'd get a flash anyways but yeah.

I didn't have it stolen and I did go to Nikon. D300 and a few lenses. I love the bodies, but man, the lens selection leaves a LOT to be desired.

I hear you, I think a lot of us looked very hard, but our L primes got in the way:)
