Besides reading the manual, which I plan to do....any tips or hints?

It is quite the flash.

Aye, a stofen omnibounce comes in handy at times. I don't use it as often as I should.

It takes a lot of practice and experience to get good as using the flash. Practice, practice, charge your NiMH batteries, and practice some more :)

I just bought one two weeks ago. I also went for the wireless transmitter ST-E2 and I highly recommend it.
For good tips and info please check this thread: Flash Info (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=46599)
Happy shooting.

Thanks! I just got it home and took some pics of my dog in my livingroom, just to test it out, bounced the flash off the ceiling...wow! I'm beyond happy with the results...

would I gain that much going from the 550ex to the 580ex? or would it be better money vested somewhere else?

I got one for my birthday and still need to put it through the paces some more. I plan on getting up close and personal with Scott Berger's Sticky. Only about 20 images with it so far but it seems nice. Looking forward to using it with my 550 EX as a slave unit.

I love the 580, but if I had a 550 I would put my money elsewhere (depending). It would be great to have both :)
