Don't know if I'm posting this in the right forum, but...
Does anyone work with this scanner? I'm scanning slides using pressurized air to clean them before the scan. Still, I'm getting a lot of dust on the scanned image. Is it possible there's dust in the scanner? Is this something I can fix myself? The product's user guide is fairly inadequate as far as troubleshooting. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

Rosie, I doubt if you will ever be able to get the slides completely dust free. I recall when I started scanning my slides, I used aircans, brushes, blew on them, a couple times even dampened Q-tips; and still there would be some spots. I think you will be doing good to get rid of the worst and get rid of the remainder in Photoshop. That is my experience anyway. Does the 4000 come with Digital ICE? I understand that does a really good job on dust removal, but the scanner has to have the fourth IR channel to support it. Good luck...

Thanks, Jim. I think the Canon has FARE instead of ICE, but I guess I'll have to look into it a little more. It's going to take an awfully long time to get rid of all that dust in PS each time I scan. I just thought maybe there's an easier way--it seems to me that I shouldn't have that much dust to begin with! Anyway, thanks for your input...I appreciate it.

unfortunately, scanning slides/negatives will results in dust. No matter how much you clean them. Dust is in the air, unless you work in a clean room (dust free controlled room). FARE and ICE will take most of them out, and you will be left with a few specks.

Thanks for the reply...I guess I'll just have to live with it :)

I have that scanner and it works well, even with the FARE. My big gripe is how unbelievalbly SLOW it is. I used the 2720 at work and it is much faster. I realize it produces smaller files, but proportionally it is much faster. Now that I shoot digital, I don't have much reason to scan anymore.

Yes, it is excruciatingly slow! I try to use it as little as possible, but every now and then, I want to see an old slide. I thought it would be more user friendly when I bought it. Maybe it's time to upgrade? Great! That's all I need is another excuse to spend money! :D

I have the CanoScan FS4000US.
I tried different things to eliminate dust. What worked best for me is to wipe the film or slide surface with a clean dust-free fingertip of a photo-grade cotton glove. Then wipe it again with a super clean same thing. Then scan.
I just shot about eight rolls of Velvia and Provia last week, so when that comes back from processing, I'll be up to my eyeballs in scanning dust.

Thanks, Bob, I'll give that a try.
I have 3 really big dogs, so between dander and hair, I imagine that doesn't help matters
