What could I have done to make this shot come out better?
(I know it is a little crooked, that is because of the cheap $17 walmart tripod, I am planning on replacing this).

Well I think you should adjust the saturation and vibrance, so the pine tree would stand out more. And straighten the image, of course.
If you'd allow image editing, I could give it a try.

Mostly looking for on-camera advice. The crookedness I couldn't fix as the tripod just didn't let me get it at that angle, it keeped dropping when I tighten it. Is there a better way I could have shot it to get the lighting to work better. I tried a few ways and I think this was the best, I manually changed the color temp in adobe raw afterwards based on the white fur.

Ah, then I think you should of set the aperture a bit higher.
(I may be dead wrong, new to this.:))

It looks underexposed... It somehow doesn't look nice to me. The colors are weird. The background is bad.
