This question pertains to the hand held diffusers.
Other than the size, are all diffusers the same?
Do different diffusers allow for different amounts of light either by thickness or material?

Not sure what you are talking about. Umbrellas and softboxes? They aren't generally hand held.

Mainly talking about the hand held diffusers that are the flat, round or disc shaped or even triangular in shape items.

I would think they would be reflectors. Some might have a translucent base that a reflective covering goes over. Diffuser generally goes between the light source, flash or strobe, and the subject and can be attached to the light source. The translucent units, scrims, are used to reduce harsh sunlight but will also work with the flash behind them I guess.
