Looks like some interesting geological activity at Yellowstone in the last week or so. This is one of the few "supervolcanoes" on Earth, and if it were to blow a good portion of the western US would be hammered. Probably only minor stuff for now (fingers crossed)...

That was an interesting read. I don't know I'd be all doom and gloom with the "go before it's too late" thing. Do you work for the media??

Before it's too late??? Very funny. If the Yellowstone supervolcano erupts violently it will pretty much destroy our country and civilization as we know it. To paraphrase an old comedy sketch by the late George Carlin, as he shows the radar while playing the Hippie Dippy Weatherman, "You can see the ICBM's coming across Canada from Russia so I wouldn't sweat the thunderstorms"

Or as the comic George Wallace once said when asked how far away he'd like to be when "the bomb" went off...
"Far enough that I can comfortably say, 'What was that...?'"

I for one am looking forward to it. Imagine witnessing something no other generation of humans has ever seen? It's all part of the nature of our planet. I wouldn't worry, because while it's "overdue" it's overdue on a geologic time scale.

I, for one, welcome our new magmaic overlords.

Who might those be? Do they need head shots?

I don't live all that far from it. Think I should start digging my shelter? :D

It won't do any good. Since it's a megavolcano, even us down here in northern Colorado are going to get wiped out if it blows fully. At least you'll go real quick. ;)

There were too many photographers in that region, anyway.

At least it will prevent further global warming.

Looking forward to seeing it? Maybe if you live in california. It is not "overdue" by any means when the range of super volcanoe eruptions is given in the range of 10,000s of years if not 100,000s. Look at the ash range at this site: http://www.solcomhouse.com/yellowstone.htm Now are you really looking forward to it??

Yes, if you've ever seen PBS's show on super volcanoes you'd have learned the same thing.
It is thought that a super volcanoe killed much of life on earth including humans which is why humans differ as little as they do. The show said for as long as humans have been around, there should have been more diversity and they extrapolated to see that a super volcanoe might have been the reason - that most of humans were killed.
If the yellowstone super volcanoe, which encompases 40% or so of the entire parki, would erupt, land east due to winds would be covered with ash and that is the midwest: farming i.e. food supply. Plus the overwhelming majority of people in the U.S. live east of the mississippi. There would be huge problems and the entire U.S. would be adversely affected for at least the next 100 years.
The great lakes water supply would be affected. Population could not shift tothe southwest or west coast due to water supply. The east is more populated in part due to it being wetter with more water. It would be the end of the U.S. being a world power.

Sure. Everything living dies, why not have be at the hands of the most profound geological event man has ever seen? It would put an end to climate change and all the other damaging practices of our species, that's for sure.
