View Full Version : Rebel XT Raw rejected by PE3

Shooting with new Rebel XT in RAW+Large JPEG. When downloading from CF card to Photoshop Elements 3.0 WITH Plugin 2.4 that is supposed to handle .CR2 RAW files, the PE3 accepts the JPEG files but rejects the RAW versions with the comment -- "Files either damaged or not compatible." (The plugin is working since it continues to convert .CRW files in PE3 with no problem.)
From very same card, the very same files are downloaded to ZoomBrowser with no apparent problems and the RAW files are converted to TIFs -- surprisingly (to me at least) without the opportunity to make any RAW ajustments. This could be the result of my unfamiliarity with ZoomBrowser. I am thinking perhaps the Rebel XT Raw format is not the same as the 20D (.CR2) though it is supposed to be the same.
I am asking the same question(s) in an Adobe Forum on Photoshop Elements and if I get an answer there, I'll pass it on here.
Any suggestions? I'm stuck! If I must use ZoomBrowser, I will be asking for some help in that area as well.
Thanks,
Jim

Try using the program in this thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=61681&page=1). It's good and free.

ACR 2.4 does not support the Rebel XT since it came out before the XT did. The latest model 2.4 supports is the CR2 file from the EOS 1Ds mkII. I'm afraid you'll have to wait for 2.5 or later to come out before ACR supports the XT raw files. In the mean time, use the ones from Canon. I doubt too many other 3rd programs will support the XT raw file until they've had a chance to work on it.

That would certainly explain my problem. Thanks.

NOW, how can I learn how to use a Canon program? I assume you mean ZoomBrowser. Obviously users here are able to use the conversion ajustments that I couldn't find when I tried it.
I'd still like to edit in PE3. Is that possible?

Thanks again,
Jim

Did the XT come with DPP (Digital Photo Pro)?

Did the XT come with DPP (Digital Photo Pro)?

YES. According to my CD label, it contains ZoomBrowserEX 5.1, Digital Photo Professional 1.6, EOS Capture 1.3, PhotoStitch3.1, PhotoRecord 2.2, and some TWAIN drivers. Is that what I want to use?

I'm embarrassed to say that this is my third Canon digital camera and I have always ignored the Canon software.

I guess I'll be driven to reading instructions at this point, but if anyone can point me in the right direction(s) it will be appreciated.

Fortunately I have all my RAW files still on the CF card and will back them up before erasing the card.

Thanks again.

Sharing information is fun. I shared with the Adobe Elements Forum the news I got here that the Rebel XT isn't compatible and they posted this which I will share here.

"On the Adobe RAW forum, Thomas Knoll (who writes the Adobe RAW plugin) posted that he had looked at the RAW images from the 350D and it was sufficiently different to the 20D that the converter has to be modified (in other words you can't just hack the version of the converter which works on the 20D with a hex editor to get it to convert) He produces a new version every three months or so."

I hope this what I call "sharing" is not called "plagarism" or "felony" by others:D.

OK, I'm into DPP and I think I'll like it for converting the Rebel XT RAW images.
In the Canon turorial on DPP, they suggest that at some point, one might like to continue the "touchup" process by sending the image to Photoshop. There is even a button to click to do that. I have not tried that yet.
I realize that on this forum most contributors use PS CS and not Elements 3, but I am an Elements user and I have become hooked on the Organizer part of that program, sooooo . . . .
My question is, can anyone suggest a way to at this point or another point get the photo into the Organizer with all my other photos.
"Organizer" does not care where the file(s) are located, it just wants to know where they are.
"Organizer" will NOT accept the XT RAW image since Adobe does not yet convert that file, but it will accept the accompanying JPEG, and it would seem desirabe to have them both in the same folder along with subsequent versions, sooo . . .
When do I do this?
Thanks,
Jim

Which version of DPP do you have? I think the Rebel XT is supposed to come with the new version 1.6, which is not yet available for download for other Canon DSLR users yet (Canon said they would make it available for download after some time).

If you indeed have version 1.6, it might be difficult for people who don't have that version to answer your question, since it probably has functionality that the older versions didn't have.

I do have the newer version (1.6), but the tutorial is based on 1.5 and so far I've found the information to be totally applicable to my version.
Actually I think my question is probably not dependent on versions, but rather procedure to be followed. If difference should be encountered, I think I can work around them.

What you probably want to do is to convert the RAW images to TIFF files. You can then access these TIFF files using PSE3.

I think that's exactly what I want to do.
I was/am hoping that someone has a suggestion of how to get the original RAW image, the accompanying JPEG and the resultant TIFF in the same folder which can then be accessed by PE3's Organizer function. Once I achieve that any further editing and the results thereof can be easily stored and accessed in the same folder -- as it now is with RAW files that can be converted by PE3. Very handy system.

Jim - What happens when you try to import (not open) the RAW images into PSE3? Do you get an error message?

When I import to PSE3, I do so by going to organizer function and clicking "get photos." This sends Organizer to folder where pictures from CF card have been downloaded.
Organizer then imports (OPENING IS ANOTHER STEP AFTER THE IMPORTATION) the jpeg version of the "RAW + Large jpeg" from the card and reports to me, "these files (a listing for each of the cr2 versions) cannot be imported into organizer because they are damaged or in a format not supported by Photoshop."
This lack of support is verified by the guy who writes the ACR programs. He says the Rebel XT CR2 format is sufficiently different from the 20D CR2 format that the program can't be hacked and must be re-written -- which he will do in a month or so.
After I convert in DPP, the TIF file can be imported with no problem. (I am mystified by the different choices of TIF files -- different bits I understand, but TIF with EXIF is a mystery.)
Thus, I can process the RAW files (with a converter I'm still learning to use) and then (as the Canon tutorial for DPP says) I can do further "touch up" in Photoshop.
I find the Organizer function very nice, and my attempt to use it is to get all the files from one capture in the same place. Organizer couldn't care less where that place is, but I have to get the RAW file into the Organizer before it will keep track of it. That's where I'm stumped.
Thanks for your interest. This is a good forum. People actually take an interest in your problems.

Because I don't have the XT, I wasn't sure if you were getting the error when importing or processing. In any case, that's the one drawback of RAW; it generally takes a few months for a new camera's format to be supported by the ACR plug-in. Once you do get all versions imported into PSE3, you can select all 3 versions of the same image and stack them so only 1 preview is visible.
