shot these guys a few months ago, right after their ATP appearance. while i was outside the venue trying to sort out my photo pass on my phone, J and Murph walked right in through the front doors...funny, i doubt any other band who play the Orpheum would do that.
the light wasn't so bad, but not much front lighting. on the plus side, we got to shoot the whole show, which is unusual for this venue.

#2 murph (lighting was tough for any decent drummer shots)

#1 is great! Not sure why, but I really like it.
Must be the motion being "just right" ;)

Great set Tim.
I really like #4.
How were the ears afterwards?

thanks rené and richard!
rené, i hear you on the motion blur...it's tricky to get right, and i lucked out there.
richard, the ears were well-packed. :D
actually, i went to another gig later that night (esp since Built to Spill were really boring me to tears for the 2nd time in a week)...maybe i'll have some of those shots up later.

#5 for me too... (What I would do Tim, is enlarge/zoom in on the face, and try to enhance the contrast slightly from the rest of the image... but that's just me) What do you think? Is it worth the time and effort? Would the result be desirable?)

Lou's hair looks like mine when I first get up in the morning ... and I have ultra straight hair! :-) Very nice set all around. Love the sepia and even the very warm images aren't quite blown out. I am grateful that I don't shoot in those conditions. :-)

thanks Michael!
lou made some funny comment about always wanting to play the Orpheum (Dinosaur didn't get really big until after he'd been booted)

Agree on # 1. Catching that motion is great when you do and sigh-worthy when it almost there but not quite. Might be at The Orpheum soon, myself.

Looks like you shot everything in 'landscape'. Do you ever shoot 'portrait' mode?
Nice set of photos though. :)

Are you only seeing half the set???

No, I'm seeing them all, but they look like they've been cropped from landscape to portrait as there's a succession of shots cut off at the waist and/or knees.
I could be wrong, but some of the crops look a little awkward and the shots might have benefited from a portrait orientation when being shot, or a wider angle (if they WERE portrait) to get the full body-length in.

interesting observation. of the portait orientation shots i posted above, one was actually originally taken landscape and cropped in post. here's the un-cropped original

i think the crop works better, but yeah, i probably could have shot portrait orientation and achieved pretty much the same thing w/o cropping.
as far as awkward crops for waist/knees...it boils down to personal choice and/or gear limitations. if i'm shooting w/ primes (like i was here mostly, due to the crappy light), i don't always have the option of shooting looser, frame-wise or sometimes the AF point selection isn't ideal (esp w/ the 5D), and you don't want to focus/lock/recompose if using the center point. also, it depends on what you want the focus of the image to be; a full-length shot, or more priority on the face. one could argue both sides and be correct.
