Many, many people have some great avatars here. So many people change them since they go out and take another great shot or get tired of their old one. Sometimes people don't even notice them, even though they're always around.
And sometimes I know that I want to hear the story behind an Avatar, or the meaning.
So post your avatar here! Past or present, so long as you used it as an avatar at some time. Stories and meanings are very welcome. And please post your avatar inside the thread - you might change it in a week... :-)
Mine:

I kinda like wolves... This was from the last Great Canadian Photo Shoot, GCPS III, in January 2005. No story to it - except that I kinda like wolves...
For those of you without an avatar, please note that I recently posted a tutorial on how to create one. Creating An Avatar in Photoshop & Paint Shop Pro (and Elements, I think) (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=61381)

Here's mine. Utah is one of my favorite states, and Delicate Arch is probably the best known symbol of Utah. I had some decent shots of it taken last August at sunset, but then I saw a post card showing a darker scene with full moon. I knew it had been severely doctored, but I liked it. So, I doctored one of my shots in PS by darkening and bringing in a full moon from a shot taken in Seattle a couple years ago.

I am an avid sport bike nut. I wish my avatar was a photo of me in action. It was not even taken by me. I pulled it off the net as free wallpaper. It is a photo of one of my heroes, Miguel DuHamel. He rides for my marque, Honda, and holds many AMA championships. I also admire him because he is one of the oldest active riders still winning contending for said national chamionships.
Here my avatar.

When I first got my 20D and 300/4L, I was so excited it just had to be my avatar:
http://www.casciola.com/pics/avatar60.jpg
Then I thought it should be a picture of myself, but I decided to hide my ugly mug behind the camera, and I layered it in Photoshop so I could change the backdrop from time to time instead of changing the entire Avatar. It is F1 season after all.

But Scottes, I have to say I miss your previous Avatar. You get used to recognizing someones posts by their Avatar, and when they switch it it takes a while to get used to the new one. There was just something about the last one that made me laugh. Come on, let's see it.......

Shortly after the 300D Rebel was released, there was a lot of discussion about the color; it seems most people were more than a little upset that Canon chose to make it silver. I was shooting a 10D at the time, and thought all the hubbub about the color was a little silly. I took a stock photo of a 10D and made it red. I just thought a red camera was somehow appropriate to the discussion going on at the time.
I recently resurrected it, mainly becuase it's easier to find my own posts when scrolling through a page of them. The red stands out pretty well. Maybe someday I'll do a red 1D MkII.

This is the first image that I ever sold. And I think my best Fireground photograph to date. One of the first shots that I took at a wind driven 4-11 alarm fire in Chicago last April.

This is my old avatar. It's a photo of me taken by a friend of mine while we were photographing the Matanuska glacier.

Well.
My avatar is me, doing my hobbie and what i like the most. Racing.
I do Tarmac Rally most of the time and but I try to practice a lot on track, this picture was taken two weeks ago, in the Guadalajara Race Track here in México. I was giving track driving lessons, to some buddys of our Car Club.
The car is a Renault Clio Sport, year 2003, it has 180hps . Its like a little rocket! jeje

On a forum like this I feel it like a must that the avatar is made from a photo of my own.

my avatar is a pic of me after a bad day at school. i had 6 margaritas and was felling a lot better to say the least! and of course i was making them myself so they were continually getting stronger as the night went on. my friend grabbed my camera and started taking pictures of me... and got some pretty funny ones. i played around with the image in ps and even edited out the piece of pepper between my two front teeth that NO ONE chose to tell me about that night, but showed up in every picture. being behind the camera it's hard to come by a decent photo of myself. i usually ike to see avatars of the actual person i'm talking to.:)

I used to use a photo of my cousin's baby...since I was still in my digital infancy stages. I then changed it to a Spiderman avatar, because I liked Spiderman 2 when it came out. I then went to another photo of my cousin's baby, but this time with a funny expression and I liked that. Finally, after hiding behind the camera, I decided that I should let people see how I look, so I am here with this one now.

A friend drew my image for me. I liked the idea of a devil taking a picture..."taking a picture of someone steals their soul" concept. If you look closely you can even see the bluelens on it.
I don't have a bigger version of it online right now, but will upload it when I can.

My avatar is from my collection of autographed baseballs. It's a commemerative Rawlings Gold Glove Award baseball with gold rather than the normal red stitching. The baseball is autographed by Andruw Jones -- Atlanta Braves center fielder and 7 times Gold Glove Award winner.

Harumph. Wolves are way cooler than ducks.
:-)
I like the idea of a contest, but this thread might nullify the idea of an Avatar contest. How about something similar, like "Best Photo Within 120x80 Pixels" which is at least Avatar-like? How much composition can you fit in 120x80? How much thought and emotion?

Mine is of my baby girl Bailey. She is an American Pit Bull Terrier (Duh) She is 5 years old but has been through so much. When she was 2 1/2 she became very ill, she almost died on several occasions. But a little over 2 years later she is almost 100% again. Thanks in part to mom working at the local animal hospital. :)

Iv had a lot over the years, but so far only 3 here:

Well this is mine . . . I have to post it later btw. I like geese and have photographs of them doing most everything. I liked this one of the big bird doing a little preening and I took it this week. My last one was of me . . . but I was too young to have taken it.

My avatar is a close up of a Dragonfly I took last summer.
I saw them flying around a pond and thought "nice to get a pic of one" sat there for hours and they just kept flying around never stopping, I realised why they are called Hawkers and Darters! Went back next day same again nothing tried early morning and still were flying, I went again and this time they rested and got a shot, and it then got easier and since then have taken many pics of them.
The last shot was my son who photographed one which rested on my finger and the camera!
The avatar reminds me that patience pays off and don't give up, the shot is there you just got to keep trying.

I suppose that this was just to signify that I was Canadian. It was short lived after so many "oh no...not another Canadian" replies.

I met a certain someone who was dragging me down to a secret duck location. Wasn't too happy about the duck shots but I did like this seagull.
http://www.pbase.com/ssim/image/40956113.jpg
Just a shot that I really liked. It was eary fall and the wind had been blowing and turned the wharf into a very picturesque mass of ice.

Like you i like to see who i'm talking to most of the time. The funny thing is some people have not themselves in the avtar, but someone they admire like their girlfriend or someone semi famous which really confuses things:lol:
These avtars are odd things aren't they -it's so hard getting something that will stand out in such a tiny picture. It has to have impact and work well in a square format. An interesting challenge artistically
Lots of contrast seems to help
I think my first avtar was of this puppy .I got abit jealous of everyone talking about their L zooms so this was my joking response

Mine is a picture I took last summer while flying from Toronto to Phillidelphia. It's a thunderstorm over Binghamton, New York. I like this photo because it represents so many things that I enjoy. First off, I would never have gotten that photo if I hadn't taken my camera with me. It reminds me to always carry my camera. Secondly, it is a photo of two of my favorite things; airplanes and weather. Also, since the photo is obviously the left wing it shows that I am sitting in the captain's seat :D :D . Lastly, I don't fly that type of aircraft anymore. This photo means more to me now because I will probably never get to fly a Dornier again  . My airline retired our last one in September. But the main reason I like this photo is I think it really captures the feeling of cutting around storms in the summer. It's a real rush.

Excellent thread.
I am just new here but thought it better to have something that would make the viewer look twice... and maybe say - what the heck is that?
Boring if you are not an aircraft buff - it's the engine of a Boeing 777 at Pearson Airport Toronto Canada.
One of the largest and most powerful engines in the World. The opening could easily swallow 4 mid sized family cars.

1. Current weather in the states (deduced from thread subjects like this one) must be wet... 'cause this is a thread about, uh, avatars... and it seems there's lots and lots of ducks out n about in the rainy weather. Yesterday saw a dozen dead ducks - road kill. Feathery fog blowing out from under the trucks in front... ahh, the imagery, the power of words to the push buttons in your neurons.
2. Well my avatar... now why did I click 'reply'... what was I gonna say? Forgot it already. Its gone down the memory hole.
3. Oh yeah, avatars should be heros and those who inspire us, those we want to emulate in some way, in our own creative drives. Whether its a pic of George Lucas or George Harrison or George Washingmachine... its like flying a flag.
And this is a favorite photo - a bit cliche nowadays perhaps but at the time... right in the moment (http://www.edwardcurtis.com/goldtone/vr.html)

I used to be a BIG football (Americans call it soccer) fan! English Premier League was my dinner every night. Alex Furguson's news were my breakfasts. Alan Shearer, Eric Cantona....were the heros. Then saw this picture of a kid who was so into the game, great emotion, just like me when watching football game back in the old time. ;)

Well, I actually started out with a Brownie Hawkeye just like in my Avatar. I must have been about 10 years old. I remember how excited I was to go on a school field trip to the local bank. I took my new camera, and took pictures of everything! Then, when I got the film back from the lab, I discovered that in my excitement I had forgotten to advance the film. All my shots were on the first frame! And you know, I'm still making silly mistakes like that.

Hi, I am new to the board and throught I would share my avatar. Picture of me back in 2000 when I was member of the Connecticut National Guard, driving a hummer back from Fort Drum in NY after Annual Training. Had the turret open and we were going about 75 MPH. Of course, the civilian models are much more quieter then the military version (notice that I am wearing earplugs). This was taken with my Canon WP1 Sureshot.

Timberwolves are animals, and what the heck is basketball? Must be some sport where people hit balls and run around the field with baskets on their heads? It must be hard to see with that basket, and what if someone runs into a photographer on the sidelines? No wonder I don't like sports, they're dangerous to photographers!

Mine isn't terribly exciting, but it shows one of my other interests. I've been using the clipart of the straight key for several years, but now that I have the 10D I've been thinking of trying to go "artistic" and mess around with lighting, etc., to get an interesting picture of the key I actually use when I work the Morse code amateur radio bands.
