Orientation Sensor

Does anyone out there know EXACTLY how this great function (the orientation sensor) works? I have read a lot and there really is not much out there. Anyone taken there camera apart (unlikely) or spoken to Canon? Part of this is for a science project believe it or not. Thanks friends.

I haf no idea. I turned it on but it doesn't seem to work = )

very easy.. I guess they have some kind of a weight inside. When the camera is vertical, it falls down and initiates contact.
