Does the hot shoe still work when the built in flash is up?

No, can not be use at the same time. But why you want to do that?

Just curious on how things work. Remote triggers etc.. I love to modify stuff.
Do you know if it is totally disabled when the built in pops up? I wouldn't expect the E-TTL to work, I was just wondering if the trigger still functions.

Yeah, there is a switch on the Canon hot shoe that can tell if an adapter is inserted and prevent the build in flash form popping up. I just did a quick test on my 20D, after the pop up flash is up, if I press that switch down, the flash will not fire.

I think it would be great for providing some fill flash when bouncing the hot shoe flash. When I first saw these, I was sure thats what they were for.
