I view my digital photos from my G2 on three different monitors and they appear dark, light or just right.. now given that monitor characteristics are different for different brands, what can I use as a base when adjusting my photos on line for printing using an online service such as shuttefly.com..???

You need to calibrate your monitor. To do this properly requires profiling software and hardware, which does not come cheap. However, if you have Photoshop (full version or Elements), you can run Adobe Gamma and use a gamma setting of 2.2. Otherwise, you can adjust brightness/contrast to obtain a satisfcatory reproduction of a standard test image such as the Photodisc target. Download from http://www.fstop.co.uk/downloads/printest/
You can check the gamma of your screen with The Amazing Gamma Measuring Applet from http://www.cs.berkeley.edu/~efros/java/gamma/gamma.html
