I posted in an earlier thread that I might be about to spend some decent money on new kit. (all depends on what other things my bonus could logically be used on and kit isn't necessarily top of the list :() After taking advice for a lot of guys/gals here - I came up with this list and price ranges. What do you think? All in £sterling and the best prices I could find:

To include Lenses:
17.40mm f4L
28-135IS
100mm 2.8 macro
100-400L IS f4.5/5.6
Teleconverter 1.4x

10D body only - 3029
20D body only - 3255
20D (18-55 kit) - 3304
300D bodyonly - 2779
300D(18-55 kit) - 2829

Hi Damian,
Nice bonus. :)
I would say the 20D without the kit lens.
I have 3 of the 4 lenses you mention ( I don't have the 100 macro but I would like it) the 100-400L I love and use the most. The 17-40L is my next favourite and the 28-135 is a nice walk about lens.
I considered the 1.4 TC for my 100-400 but I decided the images might be too soft at 400 and the loss of AF was a factor.

P.S. I'm looking at the 300 f4 IS and 1.4TC with my bonus.

Spending that much money in one go gives me shivers! Both of excitement and fear! :)

I might miss off the macro if I'm pushed!

Damian,

this is a nice bonus indeed :D

I'd really advise you to go for the 20D.
Maybe also have a look at the Tamron 28-75/2.8 instead of the 28-135 IS.

What I don't really get is why you list the 20D and 300D without and with the kit lens, if you plan on getting the 17-40/4.0 L ???

Best regards,
Andy

Just for completeness I think! :)

I am certainly leaning very heavily to the 20D.

Have you thought about the 350D. It gives you many of the 20D features at smaller price tag?

(I'd probably get the Tamron 24-70 instead of the 28-135 myself JMHO)

I hadn't, but now that you mention it I could save £300.

Yeah............toss that 28-135 out the window. Once you see the images you get from your 17-40 and 100-400, you won't even think of putting that lens in your bag. If I were you, I would get a really fast prime (i.e. 50 f1.4 or 85 f1.8) in the place of the 28-135................OR, if you really need 135, get the XT and use the money you save towards the 135 f2 L!!!!

Ahhh !!!!!.... the joys of DSLR.
While I still say the 28-135 is a useful walk around lens I agree with roanjohn, it doesn't compare to the 17-40 or 100-400.
Thats why it doesn't have a nice red stripe around it.
However you'll need something to fill that gap Damian and a prime might not be a bad idea.

Take your time, Damian, thats a whole whack of money you're about to spend.

with a young family you'll probably feel guilty as hell .
I hope you don't.

There's the rub. In the scale of things my kids and family are a country mile ahead of my photo gear needs - so I might be G3-ing for a while longer!

Hope you had a great St Patrick's Day - the Irish contingent at Cheltenham seemed to enjoy it!
