I have picked up that some lenses need rechipping to be fully compatible with cameras such as 300D. WHich lenses are these? Are they Canon, Sigma, or is it all lenses but age dependent? What are the 'rules' for knowing if a lens will work with 300D?

All Canon lenses (old and new) should work with the 300D
Older Sigma lenses might have to be rechipped.
Important: not all lenses CAN be rechipped.
Rule... ask before buying

Be Sure and ask. It's getting increasingly harder to get older lenses rechipped. I have a Sigma 400 5.6 APO that I have used for a long time. Its been a very good lense for my uses. When I bought the 20D last fall and went digital, I found out it need to be rechipped. Called Sigma, they don't have or make the parts any longer. So now I can only use it wide open(5.6). Otherwise it locks up the camera. Even at 5.6, it will occassionaly give problems.
Now I'm looking to replace it with either the canon 400 prime or 100-400, when $$$ allows or my kids graduate from college, which should be about the same time. LOL

Thanks for posting as I've been tracking that very lens via ebay! Wondered why it hadn't attracted much interest ;)
As to waiting 'til kids leave college, just hope they don't start breeding too quick!!
WoW! I posted message to Sigma 30 minutes ago and just this second got this reply confirming what you said:
'We regret to inform that this lens is not compatible with 300D and can not be upgraded, either.'

Dave,
It's a real shame as this is a good lense, especially for the price. That's why I still shoot it at 5.6 occassionaly. Sigma does have a newer model that can be rechipped, but I don't know much about it. I don't know what it's selling for, but at some price it might be useful just to use wide open. I wouldn't pay very much as you can use that $$ towards a canon 400.
