Just a quick message regarding lense prices . I have always used 7dayshop.com for odds and sods over the years but it is only since i starting pricing lenses that i have realised what good value they are . I ordered new lense last Saturday received it on Tuesday at £50 cheaper than a few retailers in the UK . Just ordered a 50mm for £55 incl postage how does that compare with any one else who has recently bought it ?

I think you might want to search the forum for problems with VAT and import duties on 7dayshop.com for higher priced items.
Best regards,

I was just about to ask that question. I have read some reviews that suggest it is possible to get hit with a big VAT bill when ordering larger items - even though the website says that VAT is included.

Not sure about the VAT and Customs thing i personally haven,t been caught
out by it but thanks for the warning . Most i have spent was £200 for a lense and bits and they were ok and the service was awesome but i am a bit weary now maybe it is a value thing ?

7days is based in Guernsey, which I believe is still part of the UK..

I'm looking at the 300 f4 IS with a 1.4 TC and I can make a saving of £135 from 7dayshop compared to other internet outlets.
Now that's not to be sniffed at.
So whats the deal, are we still liable for import duties, VAT ( even though it says VAT included ) or some other stealth tax of Mr Brown and his predecassors.
I realise it's Guernsey, which is an offshore tax haven kind of, so is it all above board or what ?
Does anybody know ?

I have noticed that they now mention VAT against items. In the old days they didn't. It implies to me that VAT is now included. They certainly say it is. It used to be a bit of a lottery, but I never paid any extra.
I suspect duty is a little different. I think that is still a lottery, but the amount is much smaller: I think around 2-3%.
All this may be nonsense, but it is what I understand to be the case these days.
A good supplier and certainly amongst the cheapest in UK.

Thanks for the quick reply condyk, it's certainly worth looking into.
Even with, lets say, 3% duty I would still be quids in to the tune of £100.
Or to put it another way.....Sandisk 1GB ULTRA II CF....and change. :)

You should not have any problems with Vat etc with 7dayshop.
In the past they did not charge VAT and you may have been caught and had to pay vat and admin charges.
Now they still do not charge vat as they are in the channel islands (no VAT), what they do is pay it on your behalf (technical matter but fact). It's all to do with the personal import laws, you can import goods up to the value of £17.95 tax free, after that you are liable to VAT and duty. As 7day shop were deliberately targeting UK customers C&E threatened them with aiding and abetting tax evasion, hence the deal to pay the VAT on behalf of thier customers on higher value items.
I ordered the 50mm f/1.8 from them the day before they brought in the VAT, but they still marked it as VAT paid.
The biggest issues with them is they can be slow to deliver and reply to complaints, but they usually come through eventually.

Hmmmm ......... slow to deliver might be a problem.
I would like that lens before the first week in April ( holiday in the Lake District ) and I can't order before the 20th of March ( credit card and bonus thing :( )

Well they do say 24-48hr special delivery, so theoretically 10 working days should be enough, but it is possible you could be disappointed.
One advantage of Warehouse Express they delivered my Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 by courier to the holiday cottage I was staying at:D.

Yeh used the old interest free credit and they messed up the paperwork, so they offered to send it to the cottage by 10am, then the courier was late and we were going out, so when I contacted them, they arranged for it to be delivered to the local PO. Can't fault the service.
