I've been a PC user since I bought my first computer. Now I'm thinking about a Mac. Looking at the specs a couple of things make me wonder when is Apple going to upgrade their machines. I know they are selling all they can build as is but from my view there are a couple of things I'd like to see improved. (mostly with the IMACs)
1 I'd like to see more than 3 USB ports (I know there are 2 in the keyboard)
2 I'd like to see Quad Cores
3 Larger hard drives would be nice (standard eq.)
4 more RAM (standard)

I know some of these can be ordered in like the RAM and Hard Drive. Any ideas or buz about when Apple will upgrade their standard equipment? I'd like to know if I should wait or go ahead. The attendant at the Apple Store here indicated that he thinks is coming this year.

No idea about an update from Apple but ignore the 2 USB's in the keyboard, transfer rate is too slow for photos.

New iMacs and Mac Minis on Tuesday. They'll sport the NVidia 9400m chipset, which has CUDA that will be exploited by OS X 10.6 with OpenCL when it's out in the spring. That gives at least two processor cores (Core 2 Duo) plus the 16 processor cores of the 9400m gpu at your disposal (32 if they put the 9600 in there). Of course, it's likely that the apps will have to be coded to take advantage of that, but hopefully they'll appear soon (provided Apple doesn't make it too difficult).

I currently own a MacBook Pro and if i were to think about getting a Mac desktop, i would probably look at the Mac Pro ranges.

8 core
can handle up to 4 hard drives (great for backing up your images)
5 USB ports
plus many more features. Also, its more upgradable then a iMac is.

Only draw back is the price...

And I think from memory Apple have only just recently made changes to the Mac Pro series so I can't see more happening for sometime. I could be wrong though.

Ya, I'd love to but the price is a big sticking point.

Follow up ? That might have been answered already (if it was I just didn't understand) will Apple upgrade to 64 bit from 32?

OS X is already 64-bit. There are parts that aren't yet (e.g., kernel), but it does 64-bit addressing already.

Good stuff, thanks for the info, I know so very little about the Mac machines. BTW was that spring for the OS X?
