I took this picture in November of 2002 with my G2. It's the last night time shuttle launch (Endeavour ). I was in the parking lot of the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) at KSC; Just a few miles from the pad.

This pic is not very good and I guess I'm looking for some advice on how I could make it better in the future.

Currently using a 20D. I'm not sure when/if there will be any more night time launches, but if there is, I'd like to be ready.

Fill flash.....a huge fill flash. There's already a flash - you just need a big reflector! ;-)
I suggest you read this + the update link at the bottom. And shoot RAW.
