As an Aus stuck here in the states, Footy is my non photography passion. Go Swans !!!

Yes we have footy here in the states, its wildly popular, and we even have a proper ground; Freo donated an official set of goal posts a few years back, and we have a dedicated Cricket stadium here in South Florida the only one in the states).

As some of you guys know an Aussie rules field is quite large. so clearly zoom and framing is key. but does anyone have good image ideas for shots, theres 18 guys a side, I should be able to get more then you normal Ball-up and Speccie shots. Any examples. I realize in sports photography that its "in the moment" but you footy fans know as well as I do that teams run in certain patterns and corridors and plays can be set correctly to position yourself for great camera shots.

More about footy in the states:
www.usfooty.com (http://www.usfooty.com) - Go Florida United and Ft. Lauderdale!!!!

I miss the footy show & on the couch  thank goodness for the internet and p2p sharing!!!:D

Er...there were a lot of words there I didnt understand (thats probably because I thought Aussie Rules was just a bar-brawl without the bar) but for examples of "what the pro's do" I used Getty Images when I was first starting out. Do a search and you'll probably get loads of results as they have quite a few people covering the league out there.

Other than that, I have no other advice to offer.

James.

Getty don't cover AFL any more - the Slattery Media Group are now the AFL's photo agency (since 2007).

Try this site here for their work: www.aflphotos.com.au

If you don't have the long lenses (long lens of choice is commonly a 400/2.8 with a 1.4x TC, although others favour 500mm through 800mm depending on the arena), then wait for the action to come to you where a 70-200/2.8 is very handy. As with all sports, the stuff that works is normally the peak of the action and emotion, but there's always room for some creative stuff (strong directional lighting, different perspectives etc).

Goals, marks, and tackles is where it's at - luckily there's normally plenty of everything in 80mins of footy. Oh, and you need to see their face too - same as all field sports.
