Mad Maldon Mud Race 2009

Hi,
Thought I would share some pics from the famous traditional Maldon Mud race, held by Maldon Lions club and Rotary club with all proceeds for charity.
250 contestants braved the freezing conditions on Sunday 4th January to raise money for charity.

This event gets bigger each year, was told there was a crowd of 10,000 people :eek:
I know lots of people who couldnt park or see the event from where they were standing.
I got there early to get a good veiw, but was frozen even with thermal underwear on!

I got there early to get a good veiw, but was frozen even with thermal underwear on!

I went on Sunday with my wife and two of my children. We got there a little late, as we didn't realise just how popular the event was. This resulted in us not getting any view at all of the race other than via the big screen.

I waited around by the shower area and got a few shots of the early finishers washing the mud off. However, once you've seen a few muddy people, they all start to look the same and besides, the showers spray sideways and I was getting wet and cold, so we retired to the pie and mash shop for lunch before the rush.

If I go again next year, I will certainly aim to get there a couple of hours before the start.

Byrhtnoth - you have some great images - You were obviously on the muddy side of the sea wall. Did you get there due to early arrival or did you have a press pass? - Oops, Just spotted your earlier post - how early did you get there?

The winner took 3 minutes and 49 seconds, the last one's were helped/dragged out about 30 minutes later!

Thanks Paul, I live local so I walked and arrived at 9.30am. (left the family to come down later)
Had a scout around the foreshore then stood at the finish area in the mud and waited for approx 90 minutes.
The foreshore soon got overcrowed but the organisers kept the crowd back, apart from people with large cameras looking like the press ;) (I arrived early and was standing were the press were allowed!)
There were so many press photographers there I had to crouch down and take pics through the gaps inbetween their legs!

If you visit next year be prepared to get very muddy to get any decent shots.
