Interesting.... I use Hoya Super HMC PRO-1 UV 1876. Not cheap but works for me.

Same here, Hoya all the way, works perfectly, doesn't scratch easily either.

I use Hoya. Hoya is one of the best.

In terms of UV, among the top brands, they are pretty much the same...........they dont do anyhting.

I use B&W's but only for CP use. UV is or has become a carry over from a time gone past.

BTW, Hoya has several versions of UV filter:
something like

Standart Coated
Super Multi Coated
HMC Multi Coated
Pro1
Ultra

Which one is good enough? :)

I don't know what bad things you have heard about the Hoya filters......all my filters are Hoya and I have yet to find a problem with them

I use the HOYA HMC super multicoated uv(0). On most all my L glass and the similarly labeled Pro on the very WA lens for the thinner mount. Former user of several different quality brands. Have sold most others and only buy Hoya for current use.

Rosco, do you think that you "need" the filter for "protection"? If that's your thought, please consider that the lens comes with a great lens hood. That lens hood, if installed, is more than enough protection for the front lens element without adding a filter to it. You're risking degradation of the image if you blindly add a filter without giving thought to the lighting conditions, etc. You also would be spending a hundred bucks or so that would be much better applied to other accessories or supplies for your system.

yes skipd.......that is what i was thinking of getting the filter..........it is more for protection....i do have the lens hood but i was thinking i still needed the fitler just to protect the front element from lets say water and dust..........do i really need this fiilter like every person at these camera stores say i do?.....

And a hood would probably have saved all damage. I can give you as many stories where hoods saved lenses where a filter would not have.

This filter fanatacism has got so bad I know someone that wouldn't buy a 400 2.8 lens because you couldn't fit a filter on the end. Oh dear....

I bought UV filters for all of my lenses (except the L I got yesterday) -- and the picture quality suffered for it. I'm now getting rid of 'em and getting hoods (like the nice one that comes with the 100-400).

While we're at it -- what do you guys think of Tiffen filters?

I've seen no image degradation from the Hoya Pro-1 range. You don't have to pay a fortune either, I got my 77mm UV Pro-1 for $49 shipped from ebay seller "Schneider Store", mailed direct from China. Took 2 weeks to arrive though.

It's because they make profit selling filters. The ONLY times that I would add a filter to a perfectly good lens - especially one which is fairly well sealed to the elements like the lens you are talking about - is when I need a special effect or MAYBE when I want to shoot in really nasty conditions like a sandstorm. The hood on the 70-200 is superb and will provide protection against anything you need to protect against.

I may be wrong but my understansing is that the 17-40 L is only "weather sealed" with a filter attached ?

Tiffen is alright with me - got several and a couple for backup.
My lenses are expensive - just protecting my investment !

DON'T use UV's or ND's and find out for yourself !

Oh yeah - I subscribe to hoods too (belt and suspenders).

Well, has anybody seen any reviews for UV filters?
I am thinking about Hoya, but I still don't know which one doesn't affect the image....

I have read somewhere about Hoya CPL. And it was quite good compare to others. It seems to me it was HMC one...

It looks like Pro1 is the top of the range (I haven't seen any Ultra).
But the price goes up as well....
Can we go with HMC one?

I'd suggest reading this before buying a UV filter: http://www.luminous-landscape.com/columns/sm-feb-05.shtml

I've got a Rodenstock warm-up filter and think it's the best make of filter I've got along with a Hama filter - compared to my other Kenko and Marumi filters.

Will a non multi-coated UV filter really affect an image that badly?
